00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 Welcome to Your Morning Boost, your daily leadership advice to help you lead your school community.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 Brought to you by AWB Education and sponsored by Grundmeyer Leader Services,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:18 Now here's your host, Adam Bush. Hello and welcome to Your Morning Boost,
00:00:19 --> 00:00:20 and thank you for joining me today.
00:00:20 --> 00:00:25 Today we're going to talk a little bit about being visible. I know many of us
00:00:25 --> 00:00:29 have a goal each year of being more visible, and the hardest part is to know
00:00:29 --> 00:00:31 how to actually accomplish that goal.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:35 If it were as easy as simply getting out of your office more, we would all do that.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:40 Heck, they even have standing desks that can roll around the hallways to help
00:00:40 --> 00:00:41 with being out and about.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:45 I used to have one of those. It was awesome. But just being seen isn't truly
00:00:45 --> 00:00:47 what it means to be visible.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:52 Visible leadership is more about being present. That includes being engaged
00:00:52 --> 00:00:54 in the work and having an impact on the team.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:59 Today, we're going to focus on one thing to think about, and that is, are you approachable?
00:00:59 --> 00:01:04 We talk about having an open-door policy, but are our people we serve comfortable
00:01:04 --> 00:01:06 with stepping inside the door?
00:01:06 --> 00:01:10 Maya Angelou's quote really fits here. She says, I've learned that people will
00:01:10 --> 00:01:15 forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never
00:01:15 --> 00:01:16 forget how you made them feel.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:21 Are you too busy for people most of the time? I have had a teacher catch me
00:01:21 --> 00:01:25 in the hallway as I'm running along to do something else, and they ask to speak
00:01:25 --> 00:01:27 for a second, right? We always hear that one.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:31 Over the years, I have learned to respond with, you know, I can give you 30
00:01:31 --> 00:01:35 seconds right now, or I can give you 30 good minutes later.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:38 Which one is the one that you need? I'm happy to do either one.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:43 Unfortunately, my calendar dictates my days most days, and I'm sure it does that for you too.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:48 We just move from one meeting or one responsibility on to the next.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:52 We need to schedule time into our own calendars to be able to respond to the
00:01:52 --> 00:01:56 people that need our leadership and to be able to make ourselves available for others.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:00 It's kind of like office hours, you know, the ones that people know exist.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:05 And then advertise that those office hours are available. If somebody stops
00:02:05 --> 00:02:07 in, be engaged in that meeting.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:13 We can just not have a genuine impact on our work if we are not fully engaged
00:02:13 --> 00:02:15 in it and we're busy with other tasks.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:21 People see through that. Don't forget, they will always remember how you made them feel.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:25 You have been listening to your Morning Boost by AWB Education in partnership
00:02:25 --> 00:02:27 with Grundmeyer Leader Services.
