00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 Welcome to Your Morning Boost, your daily leadership advice to help you lead your school community.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 Brought to you by AWB Education and sponsored by Grundmeyer Leader Services,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:00:15 --> 00:00:18 Now here's your host, Adam Bush. Good morning, school leaders,
00:00:18 --> 00:00:22 and welcome to Your Morning Boost by AWB Education.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:27 Today, we are tackling a tricky situation, and that is what to do when you feel
00:00:27 --> 00:00:32 a candidate is overqualified for a position. It's a common dilemma.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:37 You've interviewed a candidate who seems to possess significantly more experience
00:00:37 --> 00:00:40 or qualifications than the job requires.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:45 And then your gut reaction might be hesitation or maybe even concern.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:52 But before you dismiss them, it's crucial to understand why you feel they are overqualified.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:56 Don't just rely on a gut feeling. you need to dig deeper.
00:00:56 --> 00:01:02 Often overqualified is a label we apply without fully exploring the underlying reasons.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:06 Are you worried they'll be bored and leave quickly? Are you concerned they'll
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 be disruptive or maybe even challenge your authority?
00:01:09 --> 00:01:14 Perhaps you fear they'll demand a higher salary than you are prepared to offer,
00:01:14 --> 00:01:19 or maybe you simply can't imagine someone with their credentials wanting this job.
00:01:20 --> 00:01:24 Once you've identified the specific reasons behind your hesitation,
00:01:24 --> 00:01:26 you can address them more effectively.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:31 Now, here's a breakdown of some common concerns and how to handle them.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:34 Let's go to concern number one, and that is the boredom and turnover concern.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:39 It's a valid concern. If the candidate is truly seeking a challenge and the
00:01:39 --> 00:01:44 position offers limited growth opportunities, they may indeed become restless.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:49 However, don't assume this. Ask them directly about their motivations for applying.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:54 Perhaps they're looking for a change of pace, a better work-life balance,
00:01:54 --> 00:01:56 or a chance to give back to the community.
00:01:56 --> 00:01:59 Maybe they're relocating and this position fits their needs.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:02 Their answer will give you valuable insight.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:05 Concern number two is that disruption and authority challenge.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:11 Again, don't assume. A highly qualified individual isn't necessarily going to be a troublemaker.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:16 They might bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that could benefit your school.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:21 During the interview, explore their leadership style? Do they collaborate effectively?
00:02:21 --> 00:02:23 Are they open to feedback?
00:02:23 --> 00:02:28 How do they handle disagreements? Look for evidence of humility and a genuine
00:02:28 --> 00:02:30 desire to contribute to a team.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:35 The third concern, salary expectations. This also is a practical consideration.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:40 If the candidate's salary expectations are significantly higher than your budget
00:02:40 --> 00:02:42 allows, it's probably not a good fit.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:46 However, just be transparent about the salary range early in the process.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:52 This will save everyone time and avoid awkward conversations later on. You might be surprised.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:56 Some candidates are willing to accept a lower salary for other benefits,
00:02:56 --> 00:03:01 like a better work environment or a shorter commute. Just got to dig to that
00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 reason to really understand the why.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:06 And that gets us to concern number four, why?
00:03:06 --> 00:03:11 Why this job? This is a crucial question to ask the candidate directly.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:15 I ask this of all of our candidates. And maybe don't be afraid to express your
00:03:15 --> 00:03:20 surprise that someone with their qualifications is interested in this position.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:24 Their answer will reveal a lot about their motivations and priorities.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:28 They might have a personal connection to your school or a passion for working
00:03:28 --> 00:03:33 with a specific age group, or maybe just a desire to move into a different area of education.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:39 In short, don't let the overqualified label scare you away prematurely.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:44 Instead, approach the situation with curiosity and a willingness to explore.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:48 Ask thoughtful questions, listen carefully to their answers,
00:03:48 --> 00:03:53 and be honest about your concerns. You might discover that the candidate is
00:03:53 --> 00:03:58 a perfect fit, even if their resume is more impressive than the job description suggests.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:02 They might bring valuable skills and experience that will elevate your team
00:04:02 --> 00:04:04 and benefit your students.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:08 That's all for today's Your Morning Boost. Have a fantastic Wednesday.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:13 Remember, your leadership makes a difference. Thank you for doing the work that only a few can do.
