Your Morning Boost - The One Piece of Evidence Every AP Needs in Their Principal Portfolio

It's the final episode of our American Education Week series! Join us as we wrap up our five-question conversation with Dr. Lisa Hill, host of Vice Principal Unofficed and leader at Valley Southwoods. Dr. Hill answers the crucial question for every aspiring leader: If you could gather one piece of evidence right now for your future principal interview portfolio, what should it be? Discover how to select an initiative—like PBIS, PLC work, or a grading project—that clearly demonstrates collaboration, data-driven decision-making, strong relationships, and a student focus. Dr. Hill offers concrete examples and explains how to powerfully tell the story of your impact, growth, and even failure. This episode emphasizes the value of mentorship, networking, and taking calculated risks on your leadership journey. 00:00:16 --> 00:00:23 By Grundmeyer Leader Services, where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:00:23 --> 00:00:27 Now, get ready to amplify your day with your morning boost.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:36 Hello, everybody. Happy Friday. Happy Friday, November 21st,
00:00:36 --> 00:00:38 and welcome back to your morning boost.
00:00:38 --> 00:00:42 Again, we've got Dr. Lisa Hill joining us as she has all week.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:46 If you missed any of these episodes, I would strongly encourage you to go back
00:00:46 --> 00:00:50 and listen to them and then get your notepad ready to go and jot down some notes
00:00:50 --> 00:00:54 because there's just a wealth of knowledge coming out of everything that she's
00:00:54 --> 00:00:55 shared with us this week.
00:00:55 --> 00:00:58 And I think we're going to get some more out of her today on Friday.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:02 Happy American Education Week to everybody wrapping this up.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:06 Not that we shouldn't celebrate the work of our educators every single week,
00:01:06 --> 00:01:10 but it's certainly fun to have a week where we maybe put a little more spotlight
00:01:10 --> 00:01:13 under the work that everybody's doing. And this week, we've really put a spotlight
00:01:13 --> 00:01:16 on the work of our APs since Dr.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:20 Lisa Hill does the podcast Vice Principal and Office.
00:01:21 --> 00:01:25 Again, we will do our five questions. So this is time for question number five
00:01:25 --> 00:01:27 this week to wrap this up.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:31 So Lisa, when we get back from our commercial break, I'll give you that question
00:01:31 --> 00:01:34 and let you hammer this one away like you've done all the rest of them this week.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:37 So boosters, hang on. We're going to pay a couple of bills and then we will
00:01:37 --> 00:01:39 be right back after this commercial break.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:51 Have you listened to Control, Shift, Lead, the new podcast from AWB Education
00:01:51 --> 00:01:52 and Inspired Edification?
00:01:52 --> 00:01:57 He stayed with the basics. It was never flashing. I think that's one of the
00:01:57 --> 00:01:58 things that people like.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:03 If not, you are missing out. And I think of the word vulnerable comes to mind. All the time.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:06 Yep. Every month, Jim and Adam bring you three things.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:10 Something you can control, something that will shift your thinking,
00:02:10 --> 00:02:14 and something that can help you lead your school district or building.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:17 I need our staff to be that.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:22 Search for Control Shift Lead wherever you get your podcasts and start listening today.
00:02:27 --> 00:02:31 All right, welcome back to your Morning Boost. And here we go for that crucial
00:02:31 --> 00:02:33 end of the week question of the day.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:40 So here it is, Dr. Hill. If you could tell every AP to gather just one piece
00:02:40 --> 00:02:45 of evidence right now for their future principal interview portfolio,
00:02:45 --> 00:02:51 what is that must-have item that truly demonstrates leadership readiness?
00:02:52 --> 00:02:58 Boy, that is a very tough question because there's so many things.
00:02:58 --> 00:03:04 But if I have to pick one, one. Okay, I think it needs to be something.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:10 That allows an AP to shine, shows that they're a collaborator,
00:03:11 --> 00:03:16 that they're data-driven, that they're relationship-driven, student-focused.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:22 So I would hope that an AP would have some initiative that they were allowed
00:03:22 --> 00:03:27 to be in charge of from start to finish that would have all those things in it.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:31 And if they don't, they should have been part of stuff of different initiatives
00:03:31 --> 00:03:35 within their building as they're headed for that head principal job.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:39 But I think the collaboration piece and being, I really do think collaboration,
00:03:40 --> 00:03:44 data-driven, and student-focused, those three things are so important.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 So you should be able to speak to those. There's got to be something,
00:03:48 --> 00:03:50 whether it's discipline, PBIS,
00:03:51 --> 00:03:55 whether it's PLCs you've worked with, professional development,
00:03:56 --> 00:04:01 those, you should have some initiative that you could put together to show all
00:04:01 --> 00:04:03 the great work that you did and how much you've grown,
00:04:04 --> 00:04:08 that could speak to how it connects to you as a head leader.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:11 But again, that's a really tough question.
00:04:12 --> 00:04:16 Well, now, would it be okay if you don't, like if you're sitting here listening
00:04:16 --> 00:04:19 to that piece of advice right now and you're like, hmm, I don't know if I have that.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:24 Is that something that it's okay for an AP to go to their head principal or
00:04:24 --> 00:04:27 maybe to a district office administrator and say, hey, these are my goals.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:30 I would like to have this part of my portfolio. What can I do?
00:04:31 --> 00:04:35 Yes, I was very lucky. I had a few mentors when I first started out.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:37 One, Brenda Colby. She was my mentor.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:43 She taught me, if you don't read, you can't lead. And so she would let me try things. She pushed me.
00:04:44 --> 00:04:47 Sometimes it was scary, but she gave me those opportunities.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:56 Jeff Hawkins was another one, a principal of mine, that allowed me to spread
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 my wings, dip my toe in all sorts of things.
00:04:58 --> 00:05:02 Because as an AP, you don't always get to lead everything. Thanks.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:06 But you have to put yourself out there. Again, it's a lot of plate spinning.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:11 You're going to run back and forth keeping those plates spinning probably more
00:05:11 --> 00:05:15 than your principal will sometimes because you're in the trenches.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:19 But you need to have that principal that is a mentor for you.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:20 And if it's not that person, then
00:05:20 --> 00:05:25 find somebody within the system that allows you to be on a task force.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:28 There's all sorts of things that happen in a school. I mean,
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 a ton of schools just pass bond issues. You could have been,
00:05:31 --> 00:05:34 people could be on those to help promote that.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 There's just so many different things. Grading.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:43 I mean, SRG is huge. So there's all those different things. Get yourself out there. Find something.
00:05:44 --> 00:05:48 Because really, leadership skills, you develop your leadership skills so that
00:05:48 --> 00:05:49 you can do all of the things.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:55 So it's okay if you only have a few things, just hone in on your skills and
00:05:55 --> 00:06:00 be able to talk about how that experience you grew,
00:06:00 --> 00:06:05 how you supported other people, and how it definitely impacted student learning.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:09 And if it failed, then tell them that and tell them why.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:13 What's the why behind it? And I think schools would appreciate that because
00:06:13 --> 00:06:17 I think they want people who are risk takers, but yet team players.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:23 Because, again, you haven't arrived. Nobody has. We're all continual learners.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 I think it's the people who.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:33 Stay back, stay in discipline, and they're scared. I mean, it is scary to learn. It's hard.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:37 There's a lot, but it's those people that put themselves out there. They keep going.
00:06:37 --> 00:06:40 I did lunch duty as long as I could, swore I'd never do it again.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:45 And here I am out of retirement for a third time doing lunch duty.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 But I'm having a blast as the interim principal.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:53 My AP is incredible. Haley Hawkinsmith is just incredible.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:57 I learned from her. So then it's fun when you can learn from each other.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:01 And as an AP, you have an awful lot to offer.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:03 So don't be afraid to shine.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:13 Well, I think that's the catch right there. Don't be afraid.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:17 That's hard. And I get that. There's times in my career, too,
00:07:17 --> 00:07:19 where I'm like, I'm not sure I should say something.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:23 And then afterwards realize, yep, that's exactly what I should have said because
00:07:23 --> 00:07:26 the team needed me to say it at that moment in time or needed me to step up
00:07:26 --> 00:07:30 and do whatever that was. And that's awesome. That's great. Great.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:33 Well, I'll tell you what's also awesome and great has been the time we spent
00:07:33 --> 00:07:37 this week. This has just been amazing. I'm glad we had a chance to connect.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:40 Tell our listeners, how can they get more of your work?
00:07:41 --> 00:07:44 How can they reach out to you? Because I know you'd have this conversation with
00:07:44 --> 00:07:47 anybody, not just me. We know each other. That's right. Yeah.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:53 Oh, I'm happy to help anybody. I do have a website, viceprincipalonoffice.com.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:58 So you can go to that. You can actually leave me a voice message or an email.
00:07:58 --> 00:08:02 Happy to reach out to you. And then you can check out my podcast.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 But yeah, I think we're in education.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:10 We're continual learners and we have to help each other. And so anybody that
00:08:10 --> 00:08:13 wants to come visit my school, I'm at Valley Southwoods this year.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:17 Again, having a great time. Or if you want to find another school or connect
00:08:17 --> 00:08:22 with somebody, it's all about networking. You got to keep networking.
00:08:22 --> 00:08:28 Because again, I learned from you, Adam, and we go way back.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:34 But you seek each other out and continue to grow. So happy to help anybody.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:38 Oh, that's awesome. Well, again, thank you for being here.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:43 This has been a fun week for me and a lot of great wisdom coming from you for all of our APs.
00:08:43 --> 00:08:48 So one more time from all of us, thank you and happy American Education Week to all of you out there.
00:08:48 --> 00:08:52 Keep fighting the good fight and enjoy this weekend coming up because I know
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 that all of you have earned it.
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 So thank you again for joining us. Thank you, Boosters.
00:08:57 --> 00:09:01 And we'll be back again with more as we join you again next week.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:14 Amplify knowledge, widen reach, and broaden impact.
