00:00:23 --> 00:00:27 Now, get ready to amplify your day with Your Morning Boost.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:34 Happy Monday, everybody. Welcome back to Your Morning Boost,
00:00:34 --> 00:00:40 your show dedicated to help you move from being an effective administrator to a visionary leader.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:44 And this week, starting here today on November 17th, it's a perfect time to
00:00:44 --> 00:00:47 think about this because this is the start of the American Education Week.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:52 For those of you who are new to that observance, AEW is a nationwide celebration
00:00:52 --> 00:00:57 that just honors the achievements of public schools and the dedication of everybody
00:00:57 --> 00:00:58 who helps make them work.
00:00:58 --> 00:01:00 And today is the kickoff day for that week.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:05 So happy American Education Week to all of you educators out there.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:09 Today, I'm super excited to have a special guest joining us again,
00:01:09 --> 00:01:10 and she's going to be here all week.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:14 And this is Dr. Lisa Hill. She's a longtime school educator,
00:01:14 --> 00:01:19 a friend of mine, and the host of the brilliant Vice Principal Unofficed podcast.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:23 Welcome to the show, Dr. Hill, and happy to have you on board.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:27 Well, thanks for having me. I appreciate it. Yeah, tell us a little bit about
00:01:27 --> 00:01:29 yourself so our listeners can connect with you and your story.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:35 Sure. Well, this is my 39th year in education. I've taught everything from kindergarten
00:01:35 --> 00:01:37 through graduate school.
00:01:37 --> 00:01:42 I've worked in rural schools all the way to urban schools, so I've done it all.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:48 I started out as a band director a long, long time ago, and then became a counselor,
00:01:49 --> 00:01:55 at-risk coordinator, and eventually I went to the dark side and entered administration.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:00 It's been a wild 39 years, but I've enjoyed it. Well, most of it,
00:02:00 --> 00:02:01 but yeah, I've enjoyed it.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:08 Well, tell us just a little bit about your podcast. What is Vice Principal on Office? Sure.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:13 Well, after 39 years, I thought, you know what?
00:02:13 --> 00:02:17 People aren't, they always said, I don't believe you. You tell a story and they
00:02:17 --> 00:02:19 don't believe what you're telling them.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:22 Like, no, you really can't make some of this stuff up.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:28 So I just went back through the years to tell some stories with different themes.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:32 I've got one coming up on custodians because they do work hard.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 And there's always something educational about it.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:38 But I tell some funny stories because we do laugh a lot in education.
00:02:39 --> 00:02:42 True. At least we certainly should. We should because we're working with kids.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:45 You know, we only get them for a short period of time and off they go.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:49 So there's a lot of funny things that happen in education. It's either laugh
00:02:49 --> 00:02:50 or cry. So I chose to laugh.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:55 So I just like to tell the stories, but I never tell who or where.
00:02:56 --> 00:03:00 I protect all of that. But I think a lot of people can relate to the things
00:03:00 --> 00:03:02 that we go through as educators.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:07 It's a tough gig, but. I get the alert when every new episode drops,
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 that's for sure. So it's one that I really enjoy.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:14 Well, I'll tell you what, with our guests lately here, we've been playing a game of five questions.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:18 Okay. So I'll give you one question for each day this week, since you're going
00:03:18 --> 00:03:20 to join us for all five days.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:24 And are you good with continuing that trend? Is that all right with you? You bet. Let's do it.
00:03:25 --> 00:03:28 Awesome. Well, since your show is called Vice Principal in Office,
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 and I know that that's a role that you've done really, really well at,
00:03:32 --> 00:03:33 we're going to stick to that for this week.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:38 So we're going to talk about some of the nuances that go into that type of a leadership role.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:41 So when we come back from the break here, we'll kick off this first question,
00:03:42 --> 00:03:44 which is a great time to get us going on American Education Week.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 And we're going to talk about that partnership with the principal. All right?
00:03:49 --> 00:03:52 All right. All right. So hang on, listeners. We'll be right back after this.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:02 All right. Welcome back to your Morning Boost. Now, before the break,
00:04:02 --> 00:04:05 we were talking about, you know, kind of some of those roles and many of the
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 things that you've done so far in your career.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 But here it is for our question of the day. So, here we go. Ready?
00:04:10 --> 00:04:16 Ready. So, given all your time as an AP, what is the single biggest do not do,
00:04:16 --> 00:04:21 like that mistake that APs make when they are trying to establish trust and
00:04:21 --> 00:04:25 clear expectations with the new principal? That's a good question.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:31 When I think back, and it's been quite a few years ago, I remember the district
00:04:31 --> 00:04:35 I was working for, we were studying, well, Dufour was all the rage.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:36 Dufour's work was Solution Tree.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:40 So we actually went to Adlai Stevenson High School.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:46 It was just an amazing tour. I learned so much. But in my brain,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:50 because I was very new at this, I thought, well, we'll just come back and implement it.
00:04:50 --> 00:04:53 But you can't do that because every school is different.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:56 So I didn't take the time to gather
00:04:56 --> 00:05:01 people's voices and look at data and everything that needed to happen.
00:05:02 --> 00:05:07 But the neat part was the principal at the time allowed me to do it,
00:05:08 --> 00:05:11 allowed me to have the experience, probably knowing that it was going to fail,
00:05:11 --> 00:05:14 and just let me have at it.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:19 And it didn't work because we weren't Adlai Stevenson High School and we hadn't
00:05:19 --> 00:05:24 done all of the work that they had done, but I learned a lot, took a lot away from it.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:30 So my advice would be, slow down, learn your people, learn the system,
00:05:30 --> 00:05:33 find out what's going on and where you can have the most impact.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:37 You can't do it all, but if you're going to do something, which I think APs
00:05:37 --> 00:05:40 should, they should take some initiatives so they can learn and grow,
00:05:40 --> 00:05:42 so they can become the head leader.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:48 Make sure you have all your ducks in a row before you would do something that big.
00:05:56 --> 00:05:59 Well, that is fantastic advice, and that's a great way to get started.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:01 Honestly, it's a great start to our Monday.
00:06:01 --> 00:06:04 So, hey, real quickly, though, before we sign off for today,
00:06:04 --> 00:06:08 can you give our listeners a quick teaser? You mentioned about the custodian.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:13 What else is going to be in that particular one? Or can you give that information away this early?
00:06:13 --> 00:06:18 Sure. Yes, I have so many stories. But I had one custodian that would sit in
00:06:18 --> 00:06:23 the cafeteria during lunch while the kids were eating and pick apart the mop
00:06:23 --> 00:06:26 that they were going to clean the floors with.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:33 But before they cleaned the floors, they would go and clean the tables without washing their hands.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:38 So it wasn't the most sanitary place. But I thought, okay, we're eating lunch.
00:06:38 --> 00:06:41 There's got to be tons of things to clean, trash cans to empty.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:46 And they just watch the kids and it's the old mop, you know,
00:06:46 --> 00:06:49 the string mop, pick it all apart.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:54 I'm like, okay. So there's a little bit of a teaser there, but I have a lot
00:06:54 --> 00:06:57 more stories to tell. Yeah, I bet you do. Oh, that's awesome.
00:06:57 --> 00:07:00 Well, thank you for joining us today. This has been a great start to the week.
