00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 Welcome to Your Morning Boost, your daily leadership advice to help you lead your school community.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 Brought to you by AWB Education and sponsored by Grundmeyer Leader Services,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 Now here's your host, Adam Bush.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:20 Good morning, happy Monday, and welcome back to Your Morning Boost,
00:00:20 --> 00:00:23 the podcast dedicated to empowering school leaders.
00:00:23 --> 00:00:27 Today, we're diving into the first episode of our week-long series on the best
00:00:27 --> 00:00:29 hiring practices for the upcoming school year.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:34 I know that once the calendar flips over to New Year, we start gearing up for the upcoming hires.
00:00:35 --> 00:00:38 We will likely have retirements, resignations, and of course,
00:00:38 --> 00:00:40 once we see what funding is going to look like for the next school year,
00:00:41 --> 00:00:43 we will likely have some staffing adjustments as well.
00:00:43 --> 00:00:49 Now, you might be saying to me, Adam, I'm hiring all year, and I get that. I am too.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:53 It seems like we're always looking to fill a role here and there.
00:00:53 --> 00:00:56 But I also know that we will have some coming up in the next few months,
00:00:56 --> 00:01:00 and these are going to be vital. Let's be honest, hiring the right people.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:04 That may very well be the most important part of our complex jobs.
00:01:04 --> 00:01:09 So it is a good time to think about our practices to ensure success in this vital role.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:15 So today we're going to kick off this focus by talking about crafting the perfect job description.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:18 So I want you to think of a few key points here.
00:01:18 --> 00:01:22 Number one, I would start with the end in mind. Make sure you clearly define
00:01:22 --> 00:01:28 the specific skills and experiences, qualities you're seeking in your ideal candidate.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:33 This will guide your entire hiring process. We need to know where we want to
00:01:33 --> 00:01:36 end up before we can really understand where we want to start.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:42 So as you're developing that job description, think about using action verbs, specific details.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:48 Make sure you're not using vague statements like motivated or wanting to be part of a team.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:53 Instead of using those vague statements, describe the actual behaviors and outcomes
00:01:53 --> 00:01:57 you're going to expect from your successful candidate. Then get to the part
00:01:57 --> 00:02:00 of highlighting your school's unique selling points.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:04 What makes your school an attractive place to work? Why would a candidate want to come work for you?
00:02:05 --> 00:02:10 Emphasize your mission, your values, the opportunities you offer for your candidate
00:02:10 --> 00:02:12 when they come and join your team.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:15 A good way to get started on this is to gather some input from your stakeholders.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:19 Collaborate with your other school leaders, to your teachers, community members.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:24 Ensure that job description accurately reflects the needs of your school.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:25 Don't be afraid to use AI.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:30 This tool, it's very beneficial. It will help you with the wording and the details.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:34 Just remember that AI doesn't do it all. It just gives you things to work off
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 of. You will still need to do the finish work.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:39 It just helps you build the frame. But at least it would give you something
00:02:39 --> 00:02:42 to start with when you go to collaborate with those stakeholders.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:46 And what does this look like to you? How can we adjust this to really sell what
00:02:46 --> 00:02:49 we are and why a candidate would want to come to us?
00:02:49 --> 00:02:53 Just remember the job description. It's your first chance to attract the right
00:02:53 --> 00:02:55 candidates. Make it count.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 Be clear. Be specific and be compelling.
00:02:58 --> 00:03:02 Take some time. Review your current job descriptions. Are they accurately reflecting
00:03:02 --> 00:03:04 the positions you need to fill?
00:03:04 --> 00:03:09 If not, it's time to start crafting some new ones. You want to attract the top talent to your school.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:12 Thank you for joining us today. I look forward to the rest of this week.
00:03:12 --> 00:03:16 We're going to really hammer into this idea of hiring the right people to get
00:03:16 --> 00:03:17 the right people on your team.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:20 Otherwise, have yourself a great Monday and we will talk with you again tomorrow.
