00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 Welcome to Your Morning Boost, your daily leadership advice to help you lead your school community.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 Brought to you by AWB Education and sponsored by Grundmeyer Leader Services,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:20 Now here's your host, Adam Bush. Happy Wellness Wednesday to all of our hardworking school leaders.
00:00:20 --> 00:00:25 Today on Your Morning Boost, we're going to dive into a seemingly simple yet
00:00:25 --> 00:00:31 profoundly impactful aspect of our daily routines, and that is protecting our lunchtime.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:35 In the whirlwind of meetings, student needs, parent communication,
00:00:35 --> 00:00:41 countless other responsibilities, it's alarmingly easy for this crucial break to be sacrificed.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:46 However, consistently foregoing our lunch break is not a badge of honor.
00:00:46 --> 00:00:50 It's a detriment to our well-being, our productivity, and ultimately,
00:00:51 --> 00:00:52 our leadership effectiveness.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:01 Now, I want you to consider the psychological and physiological benefits of
00:01:01 --> 00:01:02 a dedicated lunch break.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:07 It provides essential time to refuel our bodies, and it prevents energy crashes
00:01:07 --> 00:01:11 and maintaining stable blood sugar levels, which, believe it or not,
00:01:11 --> 00:01:13 are all vital for cognitive function.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:18 Moreover, it offers a much-needed mental respite from the constant demands of our roles.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:24 Research in neuroscience has consistently demonstrated that taking regular breaks
00:01:24 --> 00:01:28 allows the brain to consolidate information, which then will improve focus and
00:01:28 --> 00:01:31 reduce stress hormones like cortisol.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:36 When you consistently skip lunch or eat while multitasking, as many of us do,
00:01:36 --> 00:01:40 we deprive our brain of this essential downtime, and this will lead to burnout
00:01:40 --> 00:01:45 and decreased concentration and, unfortunately, impaired decision-making.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:50 I want to challenge you to think about implementing practical strategies to
00:01:50 --> 00:01:51 safeguard your lunch break.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:54 Block it out on your calendar as a non-negotiable appointment,
00:01:54 --> 00:01:57 just as you would any critical meeting.
00:01:57 --> 00:02:01 Communicate to your staff that this is your protected time, and unless it's
00:02:01 --> 00:02:04 a genuine emergency, you will address their needs after your break.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:09 Encourage a school culture where everyone respects this time for all staff members.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:15 Model this behavior by stepping away from your desk and finding a quiet space to eat and decompress.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:19 Even a short 20-30 minute break away from the demands of your work will make
00:02:19 --> 00:02:23 a significant difference in your energy levels and your overall well-being.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:28 Consider creating a designated recharge zone in the staff lounge where colleagues
00:02:28 --> 00:02:31 can eat and relax without the pressure of work-related discussions.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:37 Prioritizing your lunch break, it's not selfish. It's a vital act of self-care
00:02:37 --> 00:02:41 that directly contributes to your ability to lead effectively and sustain your
00:02:41 --> 00:02:43 passion for education in the long run.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:49 Let's commit to protecting this
00:02:49 --> 00:02:53 essential time for ourselves and encouraging our staff to do the same.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:57 That's it for your Wellness Wednesday. Thank you for listening.
00:02:57 --> 00:02:59 We will talk with you again tomorrow.
