00:00:43 --> 00:00:46 that are available on the GLS and AWB websites.
00:00:46 --> 00:00:49 We've got a lot of stuff out there to try to help you in your mission.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:54 Today, we're going to discuss Justin Bariso's Inc.com article,
00:00:54 --> 00:00:59 Why Emotionally Intelligent Minds Embrace the Three-Question Rule.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:02 We're going to explore this concept just a little bit deeper and see how it
00:01:02 --> 00:01:04 aligns with broader research.
00:01:04 --> 00:01:09 Now, let's revisit the core idea. So, Justin's three questions are, what happened?
00:01:09 --> 00:01:11 How did that make you feel?
00:01:12 --> 00:01:14 And what do you want to do about it?
00:01:15 --> 00:01:20 Bariso emphasizes that this just isn't a formula. It's really a framework for
00:01:20 --> 00:01:22 demonstrating genuine empathy.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:26 And empathy, as we all know, is the cornerstone of effective leadership.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:29 One of my favorites, Brene Brown, famously said in her work,
00:01:29 --> 00:01:32 The Power of Empathy, she states empathy has no script.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:36 There's no right way or wrong way to do it. It's simply listening,
00:01:36 --> 00:01:40 holding space, withholding judgment, emotionally connecting,
00:01:41 --> 00:01:46 and communicating that incredibly healing message of you're not alone.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:51 Now, that quote, it really encapsulates the spirit of this three-question rule.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:56 It's not about following a rigid script, but about creating a space for some
00:01:56 --> 00:01:58 genuine emotional connection.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 Now, consider the research on active listening and, frankly,
00:02:02 --> 00:02:03 on emotional intelligence.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:08 Studies consistently show us that leaders who prioritize these skills foster
00:02:08 --> 00:02:09 stronger relationships.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:15 We also improve communication and we create a more positive organizational climate.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:20 For example, research by Daniel Goleman, I would say a pioneer in emotional
00:02:20 --> 00:02:25 intelligence, his research highlights how leaders who demonstrate empathy build
00:02:25 --> 00:02:27 trust and loyalty amongst their teens.
00:02:27 --> 00:02:31 In our school settings, this translates to teachers who feel supported,
00:02:31 --> 00:02:35 students who feel heard, and parents who feel understood.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:40 When we use the three-question rule, we are actively engaging in active listening,
00:02:40 --> 00:02:45 and we're demonstrating emotional intelligence. Let's think about a common scenario.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:49 A teacher comes to you visibly upset about a classroom incident.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:53 Instead of immediately jumping to solutions, or unfortunately,
00:02:53 --> 00:02:58 sometimes we start assigning blame, instead, let's start with this question. Tell me what happened.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:03 This simple question opens the door for the teacher to share their perspective.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:06 Then you ask, how did that make you feel?
00:03:06 --> 00:03:11 This validates their emotions. It shows them that we acknowledge their experience.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:15 And then the third question, what do you want to do about it,
00:03:15 --> 00:03:19 empowers them to help take ownership and participate in finding a resolution.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:24 This approach not only addresses the immediate issue, but it also strengthens
00:03:24 --> 00:03:28 our relationship with the teacher. It's going to help foster a culture of trust
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 and collaboration as we work through that solution together.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:36 The beauty of the three-question rule is its versatility. It really honestly
00:03:36 --> 00:03:37 can be applied in many situations.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:42 It can be applied from resolving conflicts like we talked about before to providing
00:03:42 --> 00:03:45 feedback or even just simply checking in with a colleague.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:50 It's a tool that helps us move beyond the surface-level interactions and helps
00:03:50 --> 00:03:52 us build a deeper, more meaningful connection.
00:03:53 --> 00:03:57 As we navigate the complexities of our day, just Try to remember the power of
00:03:57 --> 00:03:58 these three simple questions.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:03 They can transform our interactions and strengthen our relationships and really
00:04:03 --> 00:04:06 ultimately create a more supportive and effective school community.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:10 Just remember that true leadership, it isn't always about making decisions.
00:04:10 --> 00:04:14 Many times it's simply about connecting with people on a human level.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:18 If we embrace this three-question rule, we're going to take a significant step
00:04:18 --> 00:04:21 towards becoming a more empathetic and effective leader.
