00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 Welcome to Your Morning Boost, your daily leadership advice to help you lead your school community.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 Brought to you by AWB Education and sponsored by Grundmeyer Leader Services,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 Now here's your host, Adam Bush.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:21 Good morning, leaders. Happy Friday. You have made it.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:25 We've made it. And welcome to the final installment of our Smart Goal Writing
00:00:25 --> 00:00:28 Week here on Your Morning Boost. Thanks for joining me again today.
00:00:29 --> 00:00:33 Hopefully this week has been beneficial for you. It's certainly been beneficial
00:00:33 --> 00:00:37 for me to remind myself about proper goal writing and making sure that I'm getting
00:00:37 --> 00:00:39 all of those parts into a good goal.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:44 Today we're going to focus on the last part, the T, the part that is the time-bound piece.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:48 Here we are not just dreaming, we are creating deadlines.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:57 As Benjamin Franklin said, don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:01 A goal without a deadline, it's just that. It's a dream, as I said before.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:05 Time-bound goals create a sense of urgency, but also a sense of accountability.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:10 It helps transform those aspirations into real action.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:17 Parkinson's law states that work expands so that as to fill the time available for its completion.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:23 By setting deadlines, we can avoid procrastination and then also ensure timely progress.
00:01:24 --> 00:01:28 It helps provide a framework for tracking progress and also making adjustments.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:37 So again, like we've done all week, let's start with some actionable tips and
00:01:37 --> 00:01:39 let's start with what we can do for ourselves.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:43 We want to set specific start and end dates for our goals.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:47 Break down those larger goals again and do smaller milestones,
00:01:47 --> 00:01:51 but also have some deadlines within those smaller milestones.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:55 This is a good time to use a calendar or some sort of a project management tool
00:01:55 --> 00:01:57 that's gonna help us track our progress.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 We want to set reminders. We want to schedule regular check-ins.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:04 And maybe we do that with an accountability partner.
00:02:05 --> 00:02:08 There's another administrator in the district that you can collaborate on with
00:02:08 --> 00:02:11 your goals or even just another person within your building.
00:02:11 --> 00:02:15 Having that accountability partner that can constantly come back to you and
00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 remind you, how are you doing on your goal?
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 How far have you got so far? Are we making it to our deadlines?
00:02:22 --> 00:02:26 All of those things that a good colleague can try to help us do to stay on track
00:02:26 --> 00:02:30 with our goals. But we also want to be realistic about those deadlines.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:35 Consider the potential delays and build in some buffer time because we know we're going to need it.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:40 School days and school years never go perfectly, so just plan ahead that they're not going to.
00:02:41 --> 00:02:45 An example of this might be if we have a goal similar to something like improve
00:02:45 --> 00:02:49 school-wide test scores. That's not time-bound.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:54 Instead, we want to do something by the end of the school year and then increase
00:02:54 --> 00:02:59 school-wide test scores Then, of course, add that measurable piece, the 10%.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:03 Again, that by the end of the school year tells us when we're going to actually
00:03:03 --> 00:03:05 shoot to try to get this done.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:12 Now, when we're talking about our staff and trying to help coach them through
00:03:12 --> 00:03:16 that time-bound piece, encourage your staff to set some realistic deadlines.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:19 Create timelines just like we do for those goals.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:25 And then provide them time for regular check-ins to monitor progress and offer
00:03:25 --> 00:03:28 support. Maybe that's with me as their evaluator and their leader,
00:03:28 --> 00:03:30 or again, maybe that's with other colleagues.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:35 But providing that time and dedicating time to that is going to help us keep
00:03:35 --> 00:03:38 us on track for that goal setting.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:42 For that goal attainment, I should say. We want to help them prioritize tasks,
00:03:43 --> 00:03:46 help them manage their time effectively, and by dedicating that time to them,
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 that's going to help accomplish that.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:52 And then again, like we've talked about before, celebrate some completed milestones
00:03:52 --> 00:03:54 and acknowledge the progress.
00:03:54 --> 00:03:57 Take time to celebrate progress towards the goal.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:02 We don't only have to celebrate when we've got there. So an example of this
00:04:02 --> 00:04:06 for our staff could be if they have a goal that they maybe want to,
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 oh, let's say complete the new curriculum.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:13 Okay. Maybe we've got a curriculum review process going on and we want to get this done.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:17 So we want to adjust that to say something like by the end of October,
00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 we're going to have the first unit completed.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:24 And maybe by the end of December, we're going to complete the second unit and
00:04:24 --> 00:04:27 a February complete the third unit, so forth.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:30 It gives us some milestones for us to try to get to and achieve.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:34 We're going to eventually get to that full complete the new curriculum,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:38 but by breaking that up into little segments and providing that specific piece
00:04:38 --> 00:04:44 we're looking for, putting that time-bound stamp to that, it's going to help us to achieve that goal.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:52 Just remember that time-bound goals create a sense of urgency,
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 but they also provide a clear framework for success.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:59 They turn intentions into actions, but it's more than just setting a date.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:03 It's about building a rhythm of progress, fostering a culture of accountability,
00:05:04 --> 00:05:08 and leveraging time as a strategic resource. Deadlines aren't meant to be arbitrary.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:13 They should reflect a realistic assessment of the work involved and the resources available.
00:05:14 --> 00:05:18 When we instill a sense of time consciousness, we empower ourselves and our
00:05:18 --> 00:05:23 teams to move with purpose, to avoid stagnation, and ultimately achieve more.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 This disciplined approach to
00:05:25 --> 00:05:30 time management, it is key to transforming ambition into tangible results.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:36 That's it for this week on goal writing. If you've missed any portion this week,
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 I encourage you to go back and catch that episode.
