00:00:13 --> 00:00:15 Now here's your host, Adam Bush.
00:00:16 --> 00:00:19 Good morning, dedicated and deeply invested school leaders. Welcome back to
00:00:19 --> 00:00:24 Your Morning Boost, your daily moment of reflection and strategic insight. Happy Monday.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:28 Happy March, which means we made it through that longest, shortest month of
00:00:28 --> 00:00:31 the year known as February. And in my area of the world, it's starting to warm
00:00:31 --> 00:00:35 up and remind us that we can do this. We can get there.
00:00:35 --> 00:00:39 Before we begin today, I just want to say a quick thank you to our sponsor,
00:00:39 --> 00:00:40 Grunmeyer Leader Services.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:44 Their work alongside AWB is vital to our mission, and we are happy to join them
00:00:44 --> 00:00:48 as they are transforming education one leader at a time.
00:00:48 --> 00:00:52 Now, this morning, we just released the March edition of the Fitting 5 newsletter.
00:00:53 --> 00:00:57 If you did not receive that, check out the link in the description to get a copy of that.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:00 We will get you on our mailing list. We send this out every month,
00:01:00 --> 00:01:04 and each issue is packed with articles and services that'll help you be a better leader.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:09 Since that came out this week, we're going to dive into the five articles in The Fitting Five.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:13 And today, we're going to start with the critical issue of superintendent turnover
00:01:13 --> 00:01:17 and its impact on retaining experienced educators.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:22 This was in a recent Smart Brief article, and in the past, we've discussed the
00:01:22 --> 00:01:26 trend of increasing superintendent turnover. And frankly, I believe that this
00:01:26 --> 00:01:28 is a topic that demands our immediate and sustained attention.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:33 It's not just an administrative issue. It's a fundamental challenge that directly
00:01:33 --> 00:01:36 affects the quality of education that our students receive.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:40 As the Smart Brief article highlights, frequent leadership changes create a ripple effect.
00:01:41 --> 00:01:42 They disrupt the stability and the
00:01:42 --> 00:01:45 continuity that are just essential for effective teaching and learning.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:50 So consider this. When a superintendent leaves, it often triggers a cascade
00:01:50 --> 00:01:53 of changes. You end up with new initiatives, shifts in priorities,
00:01:54 --> 00:01:57 and even some changes in personnel, which all of this creates a sense of uncertainty
00:01:57 --> 00:02:00 and instability for teachers and staff.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:04 This constant state of flux can lead to inefficiencies, at the very least,
00:02:04 --> 00:02:09 as districts struggle to maintain momentum and implement effective programs.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:14 But, and this may be the crucial point, at its worst, this turnover has a direct
00:02:14 --> 00:02:17 and measurable impact on student achievement. Cindy Hook's quote,
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 everyone who remembers his own education remembers teachers.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:23 Not methods and techniques.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:26 The teacher is the heart of the educational system.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:31 Now, this quote reinforces that experienced educators are the bedrock of our schools.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:35 They bring continuity, expertise, and a deep understanding of their students'
00:02:35 --> 00:02:39 needs. When superintendent turnover disrupts the school environment,
00:02:39 --> 00:02:43 it can lead to burnout and attrition amongst all of these vital professionals,
00:02:44 --> 00:02:46 depriving students of their invaluable experience.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:50 Now, research supports this idea as well. It supports the idea that leadership
00:02:50 --> 00:02:55 changes can negatively impact student outcomes, particularly in vulnerable districts.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 And frankly, from my perspective, this isn't just a matter of stats.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 It's the real-life consequences for our students.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:06 When schools lack stable leadership, they struggle to implement consistent, effective programs.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:10 This leads to gaps in learning, decreased student engagement,
00:03:10 --> 00:03:14 and ultimately lower achievement. We know that consistent and informed leadership
00:03:14 --> 00:03:17 provides that best opportunity for student growth.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:21 Now, this Smart Brief article, it rightly emphasizes the importance of support
00:03:21 --> 00:03:26 systems, such as peer mentoring programs to help new superintendents navigate
00:03:26 --> 00:03:27 the complexities of their roles.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:32 But also, we must address the systematic factors that contribute to turnover.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 It's not just about onboarding. boarding.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:40 There's also sometimes some unrealistic expectations or inadequate support overall,
00:03:40 --> 00:03:43 and then that leads to a lack of work-life balance.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:48 We need to foster a culture of collaboration and shared leadership where superintendents
00:03:48 --> 00:03:51 feel supported and empowered to make a lasting impact.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:56 We know how vital this is for the success of teachers. It's just as vital for
00:03:56 --> 00:03:58 the success of our superintendents as well.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:03 So really, addressing superintendent turnover, it's not just about filling vacancies.
00:04:03 --> 00:04:07 It's about safeguarding the future of our students. We need to recognize that
00:04:07 --> 00:04:11 stable leadership, it's essential for creating a positive and effective learning environment.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:15 We've just prioritized some support and collaboration and a long-term vision.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:19 We can ensure that our schools are equipped to provide every student with that
00:04:19 --> 00:04:20 opportunity to succeed.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:26 Stay tuned tomorrow for another impactful tip from the Grundmeyer Leader Services Fitting 5 newsletter.
