00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:18 Now here's your host, Adam Bush. Good morning, leaners. Welcome back to Your
00:00:18 --> 00:00:20 Morning Boost. Happy Thursday.
00:00:20 --> 00:00:23 We're continuing this week-long topic of writing proper goals.
00:00:23 --> 00:00:26 And I would also like to take a quick moment to remind you to
00:00:26 --> 00:00:29 check out our resources that are on the awb education
00:00:29 --> 00:00:33 page and also the the resources of our sponsor grundmeyer
00:00:33 --> 00:00:37 leader services there are many resources on those pages lots of stuff there
00:00:37 --> 00:00:40 that can help you lead your school and your building the links are in the description
00:00:40 --> 00:00:44 i would advise checking those out when you get a moment today we're going to
00:00:44 --> 00:00:49 be diving into the r in smart goals and that r stands for relevant we're not
00:00:49 --> 00:00:52 just setting goals we're aligning them with our core purpose.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:01 Stephen Covey famously said, begin with the end in mind.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:06 This means ensuring that our goals align with our overall mission and values.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:12 Goals should be relevant to the school's mission and to the individual's role within the mission.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:17 If a goal feels disconnected, it's going to lack the necessary motivation that
00:01:17 --> 00:01:19 we're going to need to be able to try to see the end of that goal.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:24 A study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology highlighted the importance
00:01:24 --> 00:01:26 of goal alignment with organizational objectives.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:31 It says that when goals are relevant, employees are more engaged and committed.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:38 Simple. It creates a sense of purpose and meaning, and it transforms work from task to a mission.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:46 So like we've done all week, let's talk about some actionable tips.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:50 For ourselves, we want to regularly review our school strategic plan and then
00:01:50 --> 00:01:56 also make sure that our goals align and contribute to the objectives of that plan.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:00 Ask yourself, how does this goal support the school's mission and vision?
00:02:00 --> 00:02:05 And how does it align with my personal values and my professional aspirations?
00:02:05 --> 00:02:09 Then once we understand the answers to those two questions, then we can start
00:02:09 --> 00:02:13 to prioritize our goals based on that relevance and the impact.
00:02:13 --> 00:02:19 Focus on the vital few rather than the trivial many when we talk about our,
00:02:20 --> 00:02:25 Now, communicate also the connection between your goals and the school's overall
00:02:25 --> 00:02:27 vision to your staff and your stakeholders.
00:02:27 --> 00:02:31 Let them know what your goals are. That's a great way to open yourself up to
00:02:31 --> 00:02:35 your staff so they understand that you're setting goals as well.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:40 So, like, an example of that would be if the school's priority is on increasing
00:02:40 --> 00:02:42 community involvement. That's pretty typical.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:46 A relevant goal to go along with that might be that I'm going to increase community
00:02:46 --> 00:02:50 partnerships by two per semester. It seems pretty reasonable,
00:02:50 --> 00:02:54 but it also seems very relevant. If we're looking for that community involvement,
00:02:54 --> 00:02:57 we're going to go grab a couple community partnerships each semester.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:05 Now, when I'm helping my staff through this, I want to try to facilitate discussions
00:03:05 --> 00:03:09 about how their individual goals contribute to the overall picture,
00:03:09 --> 00:03:11 to the team and the school's success.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:16 Help your staff understand the big picture and help them connect their work
00:03:16 --> 00:03:20 to that overall mission. and encourage them to identify their own values,
00:03:20 --> 00:03:24 identify where they fit within the system and how they can impact the school's
00:03:24 --> 00:03:26 overall mission and goals.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:30 Really how they relate this work to all of our work.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:33 Provide some opportunities for them to contribute to that school's strategic
00:03:33 --> 00:03:37 planning process, especially if you're at that stage of life where it's time
00:03:37 --> 00:03:39 to really look at that again.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:43 Got to have those teachers on that mission or on that team to develop that mission
00:03:43 --> 00:03:45 as well. Bring them in for that.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 And then as we're going through this process, this is an awesome opportunity
00:03:48 --> 00:03:52 to collaborate with people who are not necessarily in their department.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:55 That's going to help with that overall school mission and vision.
00:03:55 --> 00:03:59 Have your art teacher working with your English teacher rather than just the
00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 group of math teachers sitting at the table.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:05 Really break that up and give people the opportunity to see that from a whole.
00:04:05 --> 00:04:09 So instead of assigning a goal, really have the teacher write the goal that
00:04:09 --> 00:04:13 helps the school reach its mission. We're going to help them work on that together
00:04:13 --> 00:04:16 to understand that, their piece within our pod.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 Help review it, help them to be able to make the goal a smart goal,
00:04:20 --> 00:04:24 and help guide them through that process. That's going to help add to that relevancy.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:33 Relevant goals create a sense of purpose and a sense of meaning.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:35 It drives motivation and it helps drive commitment.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:41 We can transform work from a chore to a calling. We want to ensure that our
00:04:41 --> 00:04:42 goals are sustainable, of course,
00:04:42 --> 00:04:46 but the only way to truly do so is to ensure that they are relevant.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:51 That's it for Thursday, folks. Again, check out the resources on the AWB and
00:04:51 --> 00:04:54 GLS pages. I promise you, you will not be disappointed.
00:04:55 --> 00:04:58 Otherwise, thank you for listening. We will talk with you again tomorrow.
