00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 Welcome to Your Morning Boost, your daily leadership advice to help you lead your school community.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 Brought to you by AWB Education and sponsored by Grundmeyer Leader Services,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 Now here's your host, Adam Bush.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:20 Good morning. Welcome to Your Morning Boost. Happy Tuesday. So glad that you're
00:00:20 --> 00:00:22 back joining me again today.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:26 Hope you have a fantastic day ahead of you. As we continue our exploration and
00:00:26 --> 00:00:30 personality traits, it's worth noting that today, July 8th, is National Pecan
00:00:30 --> 00:00:35 Cookie Day, a sweet reminder that even in complexity, there's always something to enjoy.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:40 Today, we're focusing on one of the most widely used and influential personality
00:00:40 --> 00:00:42 assessment tools, that is the DISC profile.
00:00:43 --> 00:00:47 We'll dive into what DISC is, the different personality styles it identifies,
00:00:47 --> 00:00:52 what makes it unique, and most importantly, how this powerful framework can
00:00:52 --> 00:00:53 revolutionize your approach to
00:00:53 --> 00:00:57 school leadership, helping you better understand your team and yourself.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:05 Let's unpack the DISC profile. At its core, DISC stands for Dominance,
00:01:06 --> 00:01:08 Influence, Steadiness, and Conscientiousness.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:13 It's a non-judgmental tool that's used for understanding behavioral styles,
00:01:13 --> 00:01:17 providing insights into an individual's preferences and tendencies in various situations.
00:01:18 --> 00:01:24 What makes DISC unique is its focus on how people behave and interact rather than why they do.
00:01:24 --> 00:01:29 It's not as much about labeling individuals, but rather understanding their
00:01:29 --> 00:01:32 behavioral patterns to improve communication and collaboration.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:38 Now, different versions of DISC exist, but all of these all stem from the same core principles.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:42 Dominance, or D, these are individuals with high traits.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:47 They're often direct, results-oriented, firm, strong-willed, and forceful.
00:01:47 --> 00:01:50 They thrive on challenges, action, and control.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:55 In a school leadership setting, a D-style principal might be excellent at driving
00:01:55 --> 00:02:00 initiatives forward, making quick decisions, and implementing change effectively.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:04 However, they might need to consciously work on active listening and involving
00:02:04 --> 00:02:08 others in decision-making so they can avoid appearing overly authoritarian.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:14 Now, I, or influence, those with high I traits are typically outgoing,
00:02:14 --> 00:02:18 enthusiastic, and optimistic, maybe even high-spirited and lively.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 They love to interact, motivate, and persuade others.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:27 An I-style leader might excel at building strong community relationships and
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 rallying staff, maybe also inspiring students.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:33 Their challenge might be focusing on details and follow-through,
00:02:33 --> 00:02:37 as they sometimes get caught up in the excitement of new ideas.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:40 Think of a school leader who's a high I.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:45 They maybe successfully mobilize the entire parent-teacher association for a fundraising event.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:50 It would create a vibrant and engaging atmosphere that leads to record donations.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:54 That would be something very typical for an I-type leader. Now you have steadiness, S.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:59 Individuals with high S traits are typically even-tempered, accommodating,
00:03:00 --> 00:03:02 patient, humble, and tactful.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:06 They value stability, collaboration, and consistent support.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:11 An S-style school leader would be excellent at creating a stable and supportive environment.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:16 They will help foster strong team cohesion. They'll also ensure smooth operations.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:21 Their growth area might be adapting quickly to change or being more assertive
00:03:21 --> 00:03:22 when difficult decisions are needed.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:28 As Susan Scott, author of Fierce Conversations, suggests that the conversation is the relationship.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 So for an S leader, maintaining those strong relationships through thoughtful
00:03:33 --> 00:03:35 and consistent communication is going to be the key.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:40 This brings us to C, conscientiousness. People with high C traits are often
00:03:40 --> 00:03:44 analytical, reserved, precise, private, and logical.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:51 They prioritize accuracy, quality, and expertise. A high C-style leader would
00:03:51 --> 00:03:56 be meticulous in policy implementation, data analysis, and ensuring high standards.
00:03:56 --> 00:04:00 Their challenge might be overanalyzing or appearing overly critical.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:06 They also may benefit from developing some more flexibility in embracing calculated risks.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:10 For example, a C leader might spend considerable time analyzing student performance
00:04:10 --> 00:04:15 data to identify specific areas for improvement, then meticulously develop a
00:04:15 --> 00:04:20 targeted intervention plan ensuring that every detail is covered for optimal impact.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 Now, how can all of this be used in the school setting?
00:04:23 --> 00:04:27 Understanding your own DISC style helps you identify your strengths and potential
00:04:27 --> 00:04:30 blind spots, which is going to allow you to adapt your leadership approach.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:34 Knowing your team members' styles enables you to communicate more effectively,
00:04:35 --> 00:04:40 assign tasks that align with their strengths, and resolve conflicts by understanding
00:04:40 --> 00:04:41 their natural tendencies.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:45 For instance, if you have a D staff member who values directness,
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 you provide clear, concise instructions.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:52 For an S staff member who values stability, you would communicate changes with
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 plenty of notice and reassurance.
00:04:58 --> 00:05:02 Okay, to wrap this up, the DISC profile, with its focus on dominance,
00:05:02 --> 00:05:06 influence, steadiness, and conscientiousness, provides a powerful framework
00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 for understanding behavioral styles.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:12 It's unique in its actionable insights into how people operate,
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 making it invaluable for school leaders.
00:05:14 --> 00:05:18 By recognizing your own style and those of your team, you can enhance communication.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:23 You can build more effective teams and create a more supportive and productive school environment.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:27 Just think of a principal who uses DISC to restructure their entire leadership
00:05:27 --> 00:05:31 team and just ensuring a balance of D, I, S, and C styles.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:34 The result of this is going to be a more dynamic and effective team that is
00:05:34 --> 00:05:38 capable of handling diverse challenges with greater synergy.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:42 The key is not to label, but to understand and adapt.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:45 Thank you for listening. Have a wonderful Tuesday. We'll be back again tomorrow
00:05:45 --> 00:05:48 with another personality trait for us to explore.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:51 Again, thank you for listening. We'll talk with you again tomorrow.
