00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 Welcome to Your Morning Boost, your daily leadership advice to help you lead your school community.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 Brought to you by AWB Education and sponsored by Grundmeyer Leader Services,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 Now here's your host, Adam Bush.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:21 Good morning. Welcome back to Your Morning Boost. Happy Thursday, everybody.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:24 Thank you for joining us today. I hope you're having a fantastic start to your
00:00:24 --> 00:00:27 day and you have a fantastic day ahead of you here.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:32 We are going to continue our personality journey this week as we explore Insightful
00:00:32 --> 00:00:37 Traits, a platform that often provides assessments rooted in the Myers-Briggs
00:00:37 --> 00:00:39 Type Indicator, or MBTI.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:43 We'll discuss what the MBTI is, the distinct types it identifies,
00:00:44 --> 00:00:49 what sets it apart from other assessments, and how its insights can be profoundly
00:00:49 --> 00:00:52 valuable for you as a school leader, helping you leverage individual strengths
00:00:52 --> 00:00:54 and foster better teen dynamics.
00:00:56 --> 00:01:01 Hi, I'm Dr. Lisa Hill, a longtime educator of nearly 40 years as a teacher,
00:01:01 --> 00:01:03 counselor, professor, and vice principal.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:07 And I've seen just about everything public schools can throw at you.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:12 And now I'm sharing my tales on my comedy podcast, Vice Principal Unofficed.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:17 It's where school leadership meets laugh out loud stories from underwear required
00:01:17 --> 00:01:18 parent teacher conferences.
00:01:18 --> 00:01:23 Yes, really to staff lounge confessions and more. You won't believe I'm telling
00:01:23 --> 00:01:25 it all with humor and a whole lot of heart.
00:01:25 --> 00:01:30 I also tackle the serious stuff too, like what schools really need to change
00:01:30 --> 00:01:33 and those behind-the-scenes moments no one talks about.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:36 So if you're ready to laugh, learn, and maybe even cry a little,
00:01:36 --> 00:01:41 but mostly laugh, join me and my 90-year-old mom, my unofficial co-host,
00:01:42 --> 00:01:43 on Vice Principal Unofficed.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:48 New episodes drop bi-weekly on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get
00:01:48 --> 00:01:53 your podcast fix. Trust me, this is one detention you'll actually look forward to.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:58 Now let's dive into MBTI, or the Meyer-Briggs Type Indicator.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 This is the foundation for platforms like Insightful Traits.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:06 The MBTI is a self-report questionnaire designed to indicate different psychological
00:02:06 --> 00:02:10 preferences and how people perceive the world and make decisions.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:15 What makes the MBTI unique is its origin in Carl Jung's theory of psychological
00:02:15 --> 00:02:18 types and its focus on preferences rather than traits.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:24 It classifies individuals into 16 distinct personality types based on four dichotomies.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:29 The first one is energy orientation. So this is extroversion versus introversion.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:34 Individuals who prefer to focus on the outer world of people and activity.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:37 These are extroverts. They are energized by social interaction.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:41 The school leader with an E preference might thrive in public speaking,
00:02:41 --> 00:02:44 parent meetings, and collaborative brainstorming sessions.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:49 The I or introversion are individuals who prefer to focus on their inner world
00:02:49 --> 00:02:50 of ideas and reflections.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:56 They gain energy from solitude. An I-Preference Leader might excel at deep strategic
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 planning, thoughtful policy review, and one-on-one mentorship,
00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 requiring quiet time for processing.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:06 Moving on to Information Perception, this would be Sensing and Intuition.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:10 Sensing individuals prefer to focus on concrete facts and details,
00:03:10 --> 00:03:12 relying on their five senses.
00:03:12 --> 00:03:17 They are practical and observant. An S-preference leader would likely be excellent
00:03:17 --> 00:03:21 at managing operational details and ensuring protocols are followed,
00:03:21 --> 00:03:24 and also focusing on immediate, tangible results.
00:03:25 --> 00:03:29 Individuals who prefer to focus on patterns, possibilities, and abstract concepts
00:03:29 --> 00:03:32 looking beyond the obvious are the N, or the intuition.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:38 They are imaginative and future-oriented. An N-preference leader might be a
00:03:38 --> 00:03:41 visionary, constantly exploring innovative teaching methods,
00:03:41 --> 00:03:45 long-term strategic initiatives, and imagining future possibilities for the school.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 Decision-making, this is thinking versus feeling.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:53 Individuals who prefer to make decisions based on logic, objective analysis,
00:03:53 --> 00:03:55 and impersonal criteria are your thinking people.
00:03:55 --> 00:04:00 They value fairness and consistency. A T-preference leader would likely be highly
00:04:00 --> 00:04:04 analytical in decision-making, prioritizing efficiency and rational outcomes,
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 even if it involves difficult choices.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:12 Then feeling individuals, or our F, prefer to make decisions based on values,
00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 empathy, and the impact on people.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:16 They value harmony and compassion.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:21 An F-preference leader would likely prioritize staff and student well-being,
00:04:21 --> 00:04:25 fostering a supportive environment and considering the human element in all
00:04:25 --> 00:04:29 decisions. As Peter Drucker famously said, culture eats strategy for breakfast.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:33 An F leader often excels at nurturing that culture.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:39 Next is lifestyle preference. This is judging, J, versus perceiving, P.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:43 Individuals who prefer a planned, organized, and decisive approach to life,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 they like closure and structure.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:48 These are our Js, or our judging leaders.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:52 A J-preference leader would be excellent at setting clear deadlines,
00:04:52 --> 00:04:57 establishing routines, and ensuring projects stay on track. They prefer things to be settled.
00:04:58 --> 00:05:03 Whereas a PE or perceiving leader, these are individuals who prefer a flexible,
00:05:03 --> 00:05:06 spontaneous, and adaptable approach to life.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:09 They are open to new experiences and possibilities.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:13 A PE preference leader might excel at adapting to unexpected challenges,
00:05:14 --> 00:05:17 maybe even foster creative problem-solving and being comfortable with ambiguity,
00:05:17 --> 00:05:19 just allowing the plans to evolve.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:23 So how can all of this be used in a school leadership setting?
00:05:23 --> 00:05:28 The MBTI provides a framework for understanding diverse approaches to work and decision-making.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:33 As a leader, you can use these insights to improve your team collaboration,
00:05:33 --> 00:05:38 delegate effectively by assigning tasks that align with individuals' preferences,
00:05:38 --> 00:05:41 like an ISTJ staff member.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:47 So an introverted, sensing, thinking, judging staff member, they might excel
00:05:47 --> 00:05:51 at meticulous data analysis and compliance, while an extroverted, intuitive,
00:05:52 --> 00:05:57 feeling, perceiving, or ENFP member might be perfect for leading a creative
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 new student initiative.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:02 It's also going to help you enhance your communication and, frankly,
00:06:02 --> 00:06:06 to develop some self-awareness. Understanding your own MBTI type can help you
00:06:06 --> 00:06:10 leverage your strengths and recognize areas where you might need to adapt your
00:06:10 --> 00:06:13 approach to connect with those that have different perspectives.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:19 If you happen to be ENTJ, so an extroverted, intuitive, thinking, judging leader,
00:06:20 --> 00:06:25 often natural commanders, you might need to consciously solicit input from quieter,
00:06:26 --> 00:06:30 more detail-oriented team members to be able to understand the complexities
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 of a problem we're working on.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:38 So in summary the myers-briggs type
00:06:38 --> 00:06:41 indicator which again is offered through platforms like
00:06:41 --> 00:06:46 insightful traits this provides a unique framework for understanding personality
00:06:46 --> 00:06:51 based on four dichotomies extroversion introversion sensing intuition thinking
00:06:51 --> 00:06:57 feeling and judging perceiving its focus on preferences offers valuable insights
00:06:57 --> 00:07:00 on how individuals perceive the world and make decisions.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:04 For school leaders, embracing the MBTI can lead to significantly improved team
00:07:04 --> 00:07:09 collaboration, more effective delegation, enhanced communication,
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 and a deeper self-awareness.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:17 Just imagine a school where the principal on ESTJ proactively seeks out input
00:07:17 --> 00:07:21 from their INFP guidance counselor on student well-being initiatives.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 This is going to ensure that both practical
00:07:23 --> 00:07:27 implementation and empathetic consideration are at the forefront.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:33 It's about building a leadership practice that respects and leverages every unique preference.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:38 That is it for the MBTI, and I hope you have a wonderful Thursday ahead of you as well.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:42 We will wrap up tomorrow as we explore cultural fit with High Match.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:46 But otherwise, thank you for listening. We will talk with you again tomorrow.
