00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 Welcome to Your Morning Boost, your daily leadership advice to help you lead your school community.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 Brought to you by AWB Education and sponsored by Grundmeyer Leader Services,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 Now here's your host, Adam Bush.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:21 Good morning and happy Friday to all the organized and forward-thinking school
00:00:21 --> 00:00:24 leaders that are joining us today on Your Morning Boost.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:28 As our current school year gracefully concludes and the well-deserved allure
00:00:28 --> 00:00:33 of summer break beckons, it's a critical juncture for school leaders to start
00:00:33 --> 00:00:37 strategically planning and prioritizing the essential work that needs to be
00:00:37 --> 00:00:39 accomplished during the summer months.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:43 We want to ensure a successful and well-prepared start to the next academic year.
00:00:48 --> 00:00:53 Now, I urge you to resist the temptation to approach this significant task in isolation.
00:00:53 --> 00:00:57 An inclusive and collaborative approach to prioritizing our summer work not
00:00:57 --> 00:01:01 only is going to ensure that all critical areas are addressed effectively,
00:01:01 --> 00:01:04 but it's also going to foster a stronger sense of ownership,
00:01:05 --> 00:01:10 shared responsibility, and a collective buy-in amongst our leadership team and key stakeholders.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:14 Initiate this process by convening a comprehensive planning meeting.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:18 Include your assistant principals, department heads, curriculum coordinators,
00:01:18 --> 00:01:22 and even representatives from your teaching staff and parent organizations if possible.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:25 Facilitate a robust brainstorming session.
00:01:25 --> 00:01:29 Identify and document all the potential projects, initiatives,
00:01:29 --> 00:01:32 and essential tasks that need attention over the summer months.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:36 Now, this might encompass crucial areas such as curriculum development and revision,
00:01:36 --> 00:01:40 facility maintenance and upgrades, or planning and implementation of professional
00:01:40 --> 00:01:42 development opportunities for staff.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:45 It's also a good time to do a meticulous budget prep and review,
00:01:45 --> 00:01:50 technology upgrades and integration and development of school improvement plans.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:55 If I draw upon the profound wisdom of Peter Drucker, a highly influential management
00:01:55 --> 00:02:01 consultant, he says to remember that effective leadership is putting first things first.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:04 Effective management is discipline carrying it out.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:09 I think he underscores this critical importance of not just identifying tasks,
00:02:09 --> 00:02:12 but also strategically prioritizing them.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:15 Now, once you've done this comprehensive brainstorming session,
00:02:15 --> 00:02:20 as a group, evaluate each identified potential summer task based on a clear set of criteria.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:25 Include its urgency, like what must absolutely be done before the start of the school year.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:30 Also, think about its overall importance and long-term impact on student learning
00:02:30 --> 00:02:34 and also school effectiveness. Think about the resources that are required for
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 its successful completion.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:40 And then we want to work together to create a clear and well-defined timeline
00:02:40 --> 00:02:43 for each of these prioritized tasks.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:48 Assign specific responsibilities to individual team members or maybe subcommittees
00:02:48 --> 00:02:51 and establish realistic deadlines for completion.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:56 This inclusive approach to prioritization not only ensures that all critical
00:02:56 --> 00:03:00 areas are adequately addressed and we make sure that no essential tasks fall
00:03:00 --> 00:03:04 through the cracks, but it also cultivates a stronger sense of ownership,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:09 shared responsibility, and collective accountability amongst our leadership team and staff.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:12 Furthermore, maintaining transparent and consistent communication about the
00:03:12 --> 00:03:17 established summer priorities and timelines and the individual responsibilities,
00:03:17 --> 00:03:21 this is going to be instrumental in effectively managing our expectations.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:26 It's also going to help prevent some potential misunderstandings and mitigate
00:03:26 --> 00:03:28 the risk of staff burnout during the summer months.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:33 By just strategically and collaboratively prioritizing our upcoming summer workload
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 and actively involving others in the planning and execution process,
00:03:36 --> 00:03:43 we can ensure a more productive, less stressful, and ultimately more successful summer.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:46 In the end, that's going to effectively set the stage for a smooth,
00:03:46 --> 00:03:52 well-organized, and impactful start to the new academic year for our entire school community.
00:03:55 --> 00:03:58 Thank you for starting off your Friday with your morning boost,
00:03:58 --> 00:04:00 and thank you for sticking with us this week.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:04 We firmly believe that a collaborative and strategic approach to planning and
00:04:04 --> 00:04:08 prioritizing your summer work is going to be essential for effective leadership
00:04:08 --> 00:04:10 in a successful upcoming school year.
00:04:10 --> 00:04:13 Have a restful, productive, and well-planned end to your week.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:17 Have a great Friday, and have an even better weekend because you have certainly earned it.
