00:00:23 --> 00:00:28 and that is navigating professional relationships with colleagues when you don't always see eye to eye.
00:00:28 --> 00:00:32 Specifically, we're going to discuss some strategies for effectively working
00:00:32 --> 00:00:36 with a building administrator in your district with whom you might have differing perspectives.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:39 This, of course, can be a tricky dynamic, but with the right approach,
00:00:39 --> 00:00:44 we can foster productive collaboration and ensure student success remains at the forefront.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:52 So let's explore constructive ways to work with a building administrator in
00:00:52 --> 00:00:55 your district when your viewpoints diverge.
00:00:55 --> 00:00:59 The first crucial step here is to prioritize understanding their perspective.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:03 Before reacting to a different opinion or decision, make a genuine effort to
00:01:03 --> 00:01:06 understand the other administrator's rationale, their priorities,
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 and maybe any constraints that they may be operating under.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:13 Ask some open-ended questions and actively listen to their responses.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:17 This doesn't mean agreeing with them, but rather we're trying to gain clarity.
00:01:18 --> 00:01:22 Secondly, focus on identifying some common ground and some shared goals.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:26 While we may disagree on the how, we'd likely share the overarching goal of
00:01:26 --> 00:01:28 student success and school improvement.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:32 Frame your conversation around these common objectives. For example,
00:01:32 --> 00:01:37 instead of arguing against a specific policy, we might say we both want to improve
00:01:37 --> 00:01:38 student literacy rates.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:43 How might this approach impact the methods our teachers are currently finding effective?
00:01:43 --> 00:01:47 Just remember to communicate respectfully and professionally at all times.
00:01:47 --> 00:01:51 Even when expressing disagreement, maintaining a tone of respect and professionalism
00:01:51 --> 00:01:53 is going to be paramount.
00:01:53 --> 00:01:56 Avoid personal attacks or even assumptions about their intentions.
00:01:57 --> 00:02:01 Stick to the facts and focus on the impact of decisions on students and staff.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:06 Another effective strategy is to propose solutions, not just problems.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:10 If you disagree with the proposed course of action, come to the table with well-thought-out

00:02:18 --> 00:02:23 I can remember a time and a situation where I just absolutely disagreed with
00:02:23 --> 00:02:24 a new district-wide assessment policy.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:30 Instead of simply complaining about it, I compiled data on our current successful
00:02:30 --> 00:02:34 assessment practices and presented a modified proposal to my administrative team.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:38 I just tried to demonstrate how it could achieve the district's goals while
00:02:38 --> 00:02:43 better suiting our school's context. And it eventually led to a productive compromise.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:48 Finally here, also know when to choose your battles and when to defer. My U.S.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:52 Marine father-in-law always said to me, Adam, you need to decide if that is
00:02:52 --> 00:02:57 a hill worth dying on. Now, while his hill and my hill were obviously very different
00:02:57 --> 00:03:00 when it comes to that actual end result, his point was clear.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:04 Not every disagreement requires an extended debate.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:08 Discern which issues are critical to your school's mission and student well-being
00:03:08 --> 00:03:10 and which ones are less impactful.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:15 Sometimes deferring to a district administrator's decision, even when we disagree,
00:03:16 --> 00:03:21 it can help build goodwill for when a truly crucial issue arises down the road.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:28 Music.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:32 Okay, to recap, navigating professional disagreements with a district administrator
00:03:32 --> 00:03:36 or another administrator effectively is going to involve understanding their
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 perspective, finding common ground,
00:03:39 --> 00:03:44 communicating respectfully, proposing solutions, and strategically choosing our battles.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:50 The goal isn't to win an argument, but to foster a productive working relationship
00:03:50 --> 00:03:53 that ultimately benefits our students and our schools. Remember,
00:03:53 --> 00:03:58 even with differing viewpoints, strong leaders find ways to collaborate for the greater good.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:01 It's like two architects designing different parts of the same building.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:06 They might have distinct styles, but they must work together to ensure the entire
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 structure is sound and functional.
