00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 Welcome to Your Morning Boost, your daily leadership advice to help you lead your school community.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 Brought to you by AWB Education and sponsored by Grundmeyer Leader Services,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:18 Now here's your host, Adam Bush. Happy Monday, everybody.
00:00:18 --> 00:00:23 Happy July 1st. Holy cow, we're just flying through this calendar year already.
00:00:23 --> 00:00:25 Halfway done. It's just nuts.
00:00:25 --> 00:00:29 But like I said, happy. But like I said, happy Monday and welcome back to Your
00:00:29 --> 00:00:33 Morning Boost, this podcast designed to give school leaders the edge they need
00:00:33 --> 00:00:36 to navigate the dynamic world of education.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:40 Quick show note for you that we will not have a Your Morning Boost episode on
00:00:40 --> 00:00:45 Friday, July 4th holiday, holiday weekend. I intentionally am not going to give
00:00:45 --> 00:00:47 you an episode because I don't want you thinking about it.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:50 I don't want you thinking about school. I don't want you thinking about work.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:54 I want you thinking about your family and your friends, your country,
00:00:54 --> 00:00:57 or whatever else it is that you want to do on that three-day weekend.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:01 Enjoy it. You've earned it. So no episode this Friday.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:05 There will only be the four episodes this week. I would also like to quickly
00:01:05 --> 00:01:07 mention our other show that comes out today.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:14 We have an episode of Control-Shift-Lead with Jim Witchman from Inspired Edification and myself.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:17 We talk about three things in every episode.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:24 One is what you can control, what you can do to shift your thinking and what
00:01:24 --> 00:01:26 you can do to lead your school.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:30 If you have a chance to check out that show, like I said, it will drop today.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:34 Just search for Control-Shift-Lead on your favorite podcast network.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:38 But today we're going to start our week-long deep dive into the Fitting 5 newsletter
00:01:38 --> 00:01:40 as we do the first week of every month.
00:01:41 --> 00:01:44 Gwennmire Leader Services newsletter comes out the first of every month,
00:01:44 --> 00:01:48 and if you don't already get the Fitting 5, I would strongly encourage you to do so.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:51 You can get signed up for that just by clicking on the links in the podcast
00:01:51 --> 00:01:55 description, and we will make sure that we get that delivered to your inbox.
00:01:56 --> 00:01:59 Today, we're going to dive into the first article out of his five articles,
00:01:59 --> 00:02:01 and this one is from Jeff Hayden.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:06 It's titled, Science Says Emotionally Intelligent People Use the 30-Second Rule
00:02:06 --> 00:02:10 to Make a Lasting First Impression, and this is published on Inc.com.
00:02:11 --> 00:02:16 This piece offers a powerful strategy for making immediate, positive connections,
00:02:16 --> 00:02:20 which is crucial for school leaders, whether you're meeting new staff,
00:02:20 --> 00:02:21 parents, or community members.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:25 We're going to explore how this 30-second rule can transform your interactions
00:02:25 --> 00:02:27 and strengthen your leadership presence.
00:02:27 --> 00:02:32 So stay tuned to discover how a simple shift in focus can create lasting, positive impressions.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:38 Music.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:42 Okay, let's get to the heart of today's Morning Boost and unpack this 30-second rule.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:46 It isn't about making yourself look good. In fact, it's actually quite the opposite.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:50 Leadership author John Maxwell, who Hayden cites in this work,
00:02:50 --> 00:02:54 emphasizes that people feel better and do better when you give them attention,
00:02:54 --> 00:02:55 affirmation, and appreciation.
00:02:56 --> 00:03:01 The core of the 30-second rule is to use those initial moments to find something meaningful.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 Complimentary, or encouraging to say to the other person.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:09 Instead of asking generic questions that lead back to talking about yourself,
00:03:09 --> 00:03:14 what psychologists call boomerang questions, the goal here is to keep the focus
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 entirely on the other person.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:20 For example, if you meet another school leader, you might say something like,
00:03:20 --> 00:03:25 I admire your ability to inspire a whole community of learners and educators.
00:03:25 --> 00:03:28 It must be incredibly rewarding to see the growth you foster.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 This acknowledges the inherent challenges and rewards of their role,
00:03:33 --> 00:03:35 inviting them to share their experiences.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:40 Hayden shares his own approach. If I meet someone in a leadership role,
00:03:40 --> 00:03:45 I sometimes say, then you've made the decision that your happiness comes from the success of others.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:51 This implicitly complements their dedication and opens the doors for a deeper
00:03:51 --> 00:03:52 conversation about leadership.
00:03:53 --> 00:03:57 The science behind this is kind of fascinating. A study published in the Proceedings
00:03:57 --> 00:04:02 of the National Academy of Sciences found that talking about ourselves triggers
00:04:02 --> 00:04:05 activity in brain regions associated with reward and satisfaction.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:10 So by allowing others to talk about themselves, we're essentially providing
00:04:10 --> 00:04:12 a positive, rewarding experience.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:17 People who ask questions, especially follow-up questions, are better liked,
00:04:17 --> 00:04:21 and those who have just been complimented are more likely to respond thoughtfully.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:29 As Maxwell puts it, those who add to us, draw us to them. Those who subtract, cause us to withdraw.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 Use those first 30 seconds to add value to them.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:39 Music.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:43 Okay, so to recap the 30-second rule, it's a powerful tool for school leaders
00:04:43 --> 00:04:46 to build strong, positive relationships right from the start.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:51 By shifting your focus from making yourself look good to genuinely complimenting
00:04:51 --> 00:04:55 and encouraging others, we create a space for authentic connection and affirmation.
00:04:55 --> 00:04:59 Remember, it's about giving attention, affirmation, and appreciation,
00:04:59 --> 00:05:03 which makes people feel valued and draws them to you.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:08 This simple yet profound strategy can significantly enhance your leadership
00:05:08 --> 00:05:11 effectiveness and the overall climate of your school community.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:15 Here's a fun little anecdote to leave you with. Imagine a new principal,
00:05:16 --> 00:05:20 Sarah, walking into her first faculty meeting, and instead of launching into
00:05:20 --> 00:05:24 her credentials, she looks at her seasoned assistant principal,
00:05:24 --> 00:05:28 Mark, and says, Mark, I've heard so much about the incredible turnaround and
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 student engagement you led last year.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:33 That takes remarkable vision and resilience.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:39 Mark, initially wary, immediately beams and the conversation effortlessly shifts
00:05:39 --> 00:05:44 to how they can collaborate to build on that success, setting a positive tone
00:05:44 --> 00:05:46 for their entire working relationship.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:50 It's those small, intentional moments that create the biggest impact.
00:05:51 --> 00:05:55 Thank you for listening. I hope you have an awesome Monday and an awesome start
00:05:55 --> 00:05:58 to the last half of the year. It's crazy.
00:05:58 --> 00:06:02 Again, July 1. Here we go. But like I said, thank you for listening.
00:06:02 --> 00:06:04 Have a wonderful day, and we will talk with you again tomorrow.
