00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 Welcome to Your Morning Boost, your daily leadership advice to help you lead your school community.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 Brought to you by AWB Education and sponsored by Grundmeyer Leader Services,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 Now here's your host, Adam Bush.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:20 Well, good morning, school leaders. Welcome to Your Morning Boost,
00:00:20 --> 00:00:25 your daily dose of inspiration and practical tips. And I have an exciting announcement to make today.
00:00:25 --> 00:00:28 Our show and our Services, we have a new partner.
00:00:28 --> 00:00:32 Gronmeier Leader Services' mission is transforming education one leader at a
00:00:32 --> 00:00:35 time, and that is the ultimate goal we have with this daily podcast.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:39 I'm really looking forward to how this partnership was going to strengthen our
00:00:39 --> 00:00:41 support for you here in the future.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:45 Now, today we are diving into a topic that's on the top of mind for many of
00:00:45 --> 00:00:50 us today as the holiday break approaches, and that is how do we support students who may be struggling.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:53 We know that the end of the semester can be a challenging time for students
00:00:53 --> 00:00:57 of all ages, and if that happens to coincide with the end of this calendar year
00:00:57 --> 00:01:00 as well for you, there's just added stress that comes with that.
00:01:00 --> 00:01:04 That stress of exams, projects, holiday performances, classroom parties,
00:01:04 --> 00:01:09 all of the excitement and sometimes anxiety of an upcoming break can make it
00:01:09 --> 00:01:13 difficult for students to stay focused and motivated, whether this is the end
00:01:13 --> 00:01:14 of a grading period or not.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:18 This is certainly a time that is really a struggle for a lot of students.
00:01:18 --> 00:01:23 And over the years, I have noticed, and I think even more post-pandemic that
00:01:23 --> 00:01:28 really the week before the week before a long break is where we start to see
00:01:28 --> 00:01:31 some additional behavior starting to creep up with our students.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:34 And now that we're in the final week for most of us, that it's probably going
00:01:34 --> 00:01:37 to really start to hit ahead for some of our kiddos.
00:01:37 --> 00:01:41 Now, I've had some form administrators say to me that now is the time to focus
00:01:41 --> 00:01:45 on academics, academics, academics, and keep pushing us to the end.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:50 But I'd also like to remind us about this quote. It's not just about the academics.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:51 It's about the whole child.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:55 This quote reminds us that our students are more than just test scores,
00:01:55 --> 00:01:59 benchmarks, and GPAs. They're individuals with unique needs and challenges.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:03 As educators, we have a responsibility to support them holistically,
00:02:03 --> 00:02:07 especially when some of our students, they just might not be looking forward
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 to what life at home is going to look like during this break.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:13 I mean, as the holiday season approaches, it's important to remember that not
00:02:13 --> 00:02:16 all students experience this time of year as a joyful occasion.
00:02:16 --> 00:02:21 For some, the holiday break can be very stressful or even a traumatic experience.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:24 So as we're going into break, here are a few strategies I'd like you to think
00:02:24 --> 00:02:26 about as we're supporting those students who might be struggling.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:28 We're going to focus on elementary students first.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:32 Think about ways that we can shorten down some assignments that maybe we have
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 at this time. There might be a lot going on at night.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:37 You know, breaking down some longer assignments into smaller,
00:02:37 --> 00:02:38 more manageable chunks.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:42 Maybe trying to focus on the things that we can do in class and not worry as
00:02:42 --> 00:02:44 much this week about the stuff outside of school.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:49 Also, really focus on positive reinforcement. Remind your teachers to celebrate
00:02:49 --> 00:02:53 small victories right now and specific praise, boosting some self-esteem and
00:02:53 --> 00:02:56 reminding our students about all of the great stuff we have going on in school.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:00 It's also a good time to think about some relaxation activities,
00:03:00 --> 00:03:01 some mindfulness work here.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 And, you know, incorporate some deep breathing exercises, you know,
00:03:05 --> 00:03:09 things like that that can help get through the school day and promote calm and focus.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:13 Another good thing here is that open communication piece. Create a safe space
00:03:13 --> 00:03:15 for students to share their feelings and concerns.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:18 It might be a time where our teachers may need to probe a little bit with some
00:03:18 --> 00:03:21 kiddos, like, are you doing okay? Are things going okay for you?
00:03:21 --> 00:03:27 Another idea here is to really focus on incorporating some collaborative activities this time of year.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:31 Organize group activities. They foster a sense of belonging and help with that
00:03:31 --> 00:03:33 community feeling for our kiddos as well.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:37 And of course, a lot of our teachers are going to incorporate some holiday-themed learning.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:40 Incorporating some of this into lessons, it's going to help make learning fun.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:41 It's going to help make it more engaging.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:46 Now, if we talk about secondary students, this is a great time to think about check-ins.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 Just a few minutes a day. Try to check in with our students,
00:03:48 --> 00:03:52 see how they're doing, see how things are going, offer some support if they need it.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:55 Remind them that we are here for them, that we are a partner for them in their
00:03:55 --> 00:03:57 education as well as their lives.
00:03:57 --> 00:04:01 With the check-ins, don't forget about that important positive reinforcement,
00:04:01 --> 00:04:02 acknowledging students' efforts,
00:04:02 --> 00:04:06 but also offer specific feedback that helps boost that motivation.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:09 It's not just about good job, it's about why was it a good job.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:14 But secondary students also can benefit from mindfulness, relaxation techniques.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:18 You know, again, practice deep breathing. Maybe it's a little time for a little
00:04:18 --> 00:04:21 just quiet time, a little meditation. I've seen some teachers do this before,
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 and it's very, very beneficial.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:26 At first, students, like all secondary students, like, why are we doing this?
00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 But again, give them an opportunity to just be quiet for a little bit.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:31 Get off your phone and check out for a little bit. That's okay.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:35 It's also a good time of year to remind your students about the mental health
00:04:35 --> 00:04:38 resources that are available, providing that information for them about where
00:04:38 --> 00:04:42 they can access these resources, and also encourage students to seek help.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:45 Again, there's a lot going on this time of year. They may have some struggles
00:04:45 --> 00:04:49 at home, too, that they're just not as willing to share, especially with our secondary students.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 We know this. This becomes an issue for them.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:54 Just remind them that those resources are available.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:57 And then the last thing to think about, this is a great time to do some community
00:04:57 --> 00:04:58 building activities within the class.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:02 Maybe it's kind of a social event, or if you have clubs going on in your secondary
00:05:02 --> 00:05:06 buildings, it's a good opportunity to, again, foster that sense of belonging.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:09 Really, the point here is that if we can implement a few strategies,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:12 we can create a more supportive and nurturing learning environment for all of
00:05:12 --> 00:05:15 our students, especially those who may be struggling during the holiday season.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:19 A little effort can go a long way in making a positive impact on a student's life.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:23 Thank you for listening today. Have a great day. Happy Monday,
00:05:23 --> 00:05:24 and we will talk with you again tomorrow.
