00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 Welcome to your Morning Boost, your daily leadership advice to help you lead your school community.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 Brought to you by AWB Education and sponsored by Grundmeyer Leader Services,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:19 Now here's your host, Adam Bush. Well, hello and welcome to your Morning Boost.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:20 Happy Thursday, everybody.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:24 Today, July 3rd, according to my little National Day calendar,
00:00:25 --> 00:00:29 says that today is National Chocolate Wafer Day.
00:00:29 --> 00:00:33 A sweet reminder to find the little moments of joy and celebrate the small wins,
00:00:33 --> 00:00:37 especially as we head into a holiday weekend, which is a quick reminder that
00:00:37 --> 00:00:39 this will be the last show for this week.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:43 We will not have a show on the 4th, and that is intentional because I don't
00:00:43 --> 00:00:46 want you to be thinking about school or thinking about your job.
00:00:46 --> 00:00:49 I want you to just be thinking about your family or your friends.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:50 So enjoy the holiday weekend.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:54 Today, though, we are going to shift our focus to a very timely and relevant
00:00:54 --> 00:00:57 topic for school leaders, and that is artificial intelligence.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:02 I know we talk about AI quite a bit on this show, and we do some AI articles
00:01:02 --> 00:01:08 on the AWB webpage as well, but let's face it, this is just an integrated part
00:01:08 --> 00:01:11 of society, let alone education anymore.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:17 And we're going to discuss an article from QKED Mindshift. It's titled, AI is Moving Fast.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:19 Here are some helpful ways to support teachers.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:23 I think this piece offers some very practical advice on how school leaders can
00:01:23 --> 00:01:28 effectively integrate AI into the educational landscape while providing the
00:01:28 --> 00:01:30 necessary support for their teaching staff.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:35 We are going to explore strategies to empower your educators to leverage AI
00:01:35 --> 00:01:39 as a tool for enhanced learning, rather than viewing it as a challenge.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:44 So stay tuned, discover how you can lead your school into the future of education
00:01:44 --> 00:01:46 with confidence and innovation.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:52 Feeling the pressure of school leadership? Ready to make a real impact?
00:01:53 --> 00:01:55 Then listen to Control Shift Lead.
00:01:57 --> 00:02:01 The podcast designed exclusively for all school leaders.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:07 This partnership between AWB Education and Inspired Edification will bring you
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 three powerful takeaways in every episode.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:14 Something you can control in your work, something that will shift your thinking
00:02:14 --> 00:02:18 or practice, and something concrete to help you lead your school or district.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:25 Get practical strategies and fresh perspectives to empower your leadership journey.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:29 New episodes drop on the first of every month.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:34 Search for Control Shift Lead on your favorite podcast platform and subscribe today.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:42 Okay, we are going to draw some insights from this QKED MindShift article, AI is Moving Fast.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:45 Here are some helpful ways to support teachers. As school leaders,
00:02:46 --> 00:02:51 embracing AI doesn't mean replacing teachers, but rather empowering them with new tools.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:56 One key takeaway from the article is this importance of providing ongoing professional
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 development. This isn't a one-time workshop.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:04 It's a continuous learning journey where teachers can explore AI tools and understand
00:03:04 --> 00:03:09 its potential and learn how to integrate it effectively into their curriculum and daily practices.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:14 Rafael Adamek, Director of Technology and Innovation for a school district in
00:03:14 --> 00:03:18 rural Vermont, emphasizes that professional development should give educators
00:03:18 --> 00:03:21 a foundational understanding of how AI works.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:26 Another crucial aspect is fostering a culture of experimentation and open dialogue.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:28 Teachers need a safe place to
00:03:28 --> 00:03:33 try new AI applications and share what works and, frankly, what doesn't.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:37 Also discuss the ethical considerations surrounding AI use in the classroom.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:41 Kevin Giodati, Director of Technology for a school district in New York,
00:03:41 --> 00:03:46 believes that a lack of that expectation of an outcome breeds more innovation.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:52 The article also highlights the need for clear guidelines and policies regarding
00:03:52 --> 00:03:56 AI use, and this is the part that we as the leaders of our school district are
00:03:56 --> 00:03:57 going to have to take some initiative.
00:03:57 --> 00:04:02 While encouraging innovation, we as school leaders must also establish clear
00:04:02 --> 00:04:06 boundaries and expectations to ensure responsible and equitable implementation.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:11 This includes addressing concerns about academic integrity, data privacy,
00:04:11 --> 00:04:16 and potential biases in AI tools. For example, you definitely don't want to
00:04:16 --> 00:04:18 give ChatGPT your students' names.
00:04:19 --> 00:04:23 Providing access to curated and vetted AI resources is also vital.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:27 Teachers shouldn't have to sift through countless options.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:33 Offering a pre-approved list of educational AI tools can save time and ensure quality.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:39 Finally, celebrate success and share innovative uses of AI. All of this can
00:04:39 --> 00:04:40 inspire other educators.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:44 I personally know about a high school English teacher who, with her principal's
00:04:44 --> 00:04:47 encouragement, started using an AI writing assistant to help students,
00:04:47 --> 00:04:51 help them brainstorm ideas, get instant feedback on their drafts.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:55 Now, initially, some of her colleagues in the department were skeptical,
00:04:55 --> 00:04:58 but when they saw how much it improved student writing and engagement,
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 they became eager to learn more.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:05 This teacher then led a district-wide workshop showcasing the transformative
00:05:05 --> 00:05:07 power of AI when used thoughtfully.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:17 Okay, to wrap up this week, we are navigating the rapid of advancements in AI.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:21 And we know that this requires us as school leaders to proactively support our teachers.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:24 It involves providing continuous professional development.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:29 Fostering a culture of experimentation, establishing clear policies,
00:05:30 --> 00:05:35 offering curated resources, and celebrating innovative AI integration.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:39 By taking a few steps, we can empower our educators to effectively leverage
00:05:39 --> 00:05:43 AI, which will enhance teaching and learning across our school.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:47 Quick bonus for this week's Morning Boost, I also wanted to briefly mention
00:05:47 --> 00:05:50 the fifth article from the Grundmeyer Leader Services Fitting 5 newsletter.
00:05:51 --> 00:05:55 Of course, five articles, but only four days this week, so we're not getting to article number five.
00:05:55 --> 00:06:00 But article number five is Building Better Brains, Encouraging Executive Functioning at Every Level.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:04 This one is on the AWB Education webpage on our blogs.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:08 This article, authored by Melinda Zuck, dives into the critical role of executive
00:06:08 --> 00:06:12 functioning skills in student success, and she offers strategies for nurturing
00:06:12 --> 00:06:14 these abilities across all grade levels.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:18 Melinda is an expert in school counseling. She always has some great insights,
00:06:18 --> 00:06:21 so I promise you it's definitely worth your time to check that out.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:24 And lastly, again, since there is no episode tomorrow due to the 4th,
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 please remember to take some much deserved time off.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:30 We need all of our school leaders to shut off the job when they walk out the
00:06:30 --> 00:06:33 door today if they're not already taken this week off.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:37 Thank you for listening. Have a wonderful weekend. We will talk with you again next week.
