I hope your weekend was awesome and you're ready for another work week. Depending on where you're at in your school schedule, I suppose this could be conferences week or fall sports playoffs, you name it. Lots going on at the end of October. And as you're headed in this morning, are all of those checklist items you need to get wrapped up going around your head. They are mine, especially to start the week. If you're anything like me, I'm sure you have this grand schedule for the week in your head. Everything is mapped out perfectly. Just it's going to end like a good movie that's come to the end of the week with a happy ending. And maybe before you left the shower this morning, there was an email that came through that just threw your master plan out the window. Typical week, right, So how do we ever get past the point that we can actually accomplish all that is on our task list, not to mention all of the work that we won't even put on our task list because it's too full and there just isn't any room for anything else. Maybe there isn't enough room for that idea I had a few weeks ago that could be that golden ticket to see the improvement in my school that I'm looking for. The hardest part is that, for most of us, the answer actually lies in the concept of delegation. This word scares a lot of people because it means that I am going to trust someone else to do the work that I need to get done. But building that trust through a strategic plan for delegation is the key to success. I cannot just hand something to my assistant and expect that it will be done exactly the way I would have done it. Maybe that's actually okay, and maybe I just need to understand that that handing that to them is all that does need to happen. It doesn't need to be exactly how I would have done it. But before I delegate something, I need to understand what it is that I'm delegating. Am I just asking for a task to be completed or am I asking someone to take ownership? In Craig Grokeel's The Leadership Podcast, he has a quote that sums us up very well. He says that when you delegate tasks, you create followers, but when you delegate authority, you create leaders. That is why it is so important to understand what we need out of delegation. This isn't creating a partner in this particular aspect of our work. It is having someone take on a task that will become theirs but also still be attributed to us. That's why the rollout is so key. Now we're going to talk more about this in later future episodes about some strategies for that rollout, but I want to leave you with another quote to ponder this morning. This was a presentation I saw many years ago and it had stuck with me throughout my career. It simply says, only do what only you can do. That's right. If we are doing something that somebody else in the organization can do instead of us, that frees up your talents to be able to do the things that only you can do. That's only just going to make your organization thrive. Only do what only you can do have a great start to the week. We will talk with you again tomorrow.
