00:00:01 --> 00:00:06 Hi, I'm Dr. Lisa Hill, a longtime educator of nearly 40 years as a teacher,
00:00:06 --> 00:00:08 counselor, professor, and vice principal.
00:00:08 --> 00:00:12 And I've seen just about everything public schools can throw at you.
00:00:12 --> 00:00:17 And now I'm sharing my tales on my comedy podcast, Vice Principal Unofficed.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:21 It's where school leadership meets laugh out loud stories from underwear required
00:00:21 --> 00:00:23 parent teacher conferences.
00:00:23 --> 00:00:27 Yes, really. To staff lounge confessions and more. You won't believe.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:30 I'm telling it all with humor and a whole lot of heart.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:35 I also tackle the serious stuff too, like what schools really need to change
00:00:35 --> 00:00:38 and those behind-the-scenes moments no one talks about.
00:00:38 --> 00:00:41 So if you're ready to laugh, learn, and maybe even cry a little,
00:00:41 --> 00:00:46 but mostly laugh, join me and my 90-year-old mom, my unofficial co-host,
00:00:46 --> 00:00:48 on Vice Principal Unofficed.
00:00:48 --> 00:00:53 New episodes drop bi-weekly on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get
00:00:53 --> 00:00:58 your podcast fix. Trust me, this is one detention you'll actually look forward to.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:05 Welcome to your Morning Boost, your daily leadership advice to help you lead your school community.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:09 Brought to you by AWB Education and sponsored by Grundmeyer Leader Services,
00:01:09 --> 00:01:14 where together we are transforming education, one leader at a time.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:19 Now here's your host, Adam Bush. Welcome back to your Morning Boost. Happy Tuesday.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:22 Today is July 15th, and I am thrilled to have you join me today.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:25 Hope you're having a fantastic start to your day.
00:01:25 --> 00:01:29 Today's topic is incredibly vital for every educational leader,
00:01:29 --> 00:01:31 and that is culturally responsive leadership.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:35 In our increasingly diverse schools, understanding and embracing the varied
00:01:35 --> 00:01:38 backgrounds of our students and staff isn't just an ideal.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:42 It's necessary for true equity and success.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:46 Today, we're going to explore what it means to lead with cultural responsiveness
00:01:46 --> 00:01:49 and how you can integrate it into your daily practice.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:55 Music.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:58 Culturally Responsive Leadership is about more than just acknowledging diversity.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 It's about actively leveraging it to create a richer, more inclusive,
00:02:02 --> 00:02:04 and more effective learning environment.
00:02:05 --> 00:02:09 One key aspect is to deeply understand the cultural lenses through which your
00:02:09 --> 00:02:11 students and staff perceive the world.
00:02:11 --> 00:02:15 This involves self-reflection on your own biases and assumptions,
00:02:15 --> 00:02:18 as well as a genuine effort to learn about the different cultural norms,
00:02:19 --> 00:02:23 even communication styles and values that are present in your school community.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:27 As noted in culturally responsive teaching from 2018, Theory,
00:02:27 --> 00:02:31 Research, and Practice, culturally responsive pedagogy is about validating and
00:02:31 --> 00:02:33 affirming students' cultural identities.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:37 Another crucial step is to ensure that curriculum and instructional practices
00:02:37 --> 00:02:40 reflect the diverse experiences of your students.
00:02:41 --> 00:02:45 This might mean incorporating texts from various cultures, using culturally
00:02:45 --> 00:02:50 relevant examples and lessons, or encouraging students to share their unique perspectives.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:54 I think of a leader who, after noticing a lack of representation,
00:02:54 --> 00:02:59 actively sought out and implemented a new reading list that included authors
00:02:59 --> 00:03:03 and narratives from multiple cultural backgrounds, leading to increased student
00:03:03 --> 00:03:05 engagement and a deeper understanding of the world.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:10 Culturally responsive leaders empower staff to integrate culturally relevant
00:03:10 --> 00:03:14 pedagogy into their classrooms and provide the resources and professional development
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 necessary for them to do so effectively.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:21 It also involves creating a school climate where all voices are heard and respected
00:03:21 --> 00:03:25 and where cultural differences are seen as assets, not obstacles.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 In essence, culturally responsive leadership is about intentionality,
00:03:34 --> 00:03:38 intentionally building bridges, intentionally valuing difference,
00:03:38 --> 00:03:42 and intentionally creating a space where every individual feels seen,
00:03:42 --> 00:03:43 respected, and empowered.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:48 By embracing culturally responsive leadership, you are not just improving academic
00:03:48 --> 00:03:53 outcomes, you're cultivating a more just and equitable educational experience for everyone.
00:03:54 --> 00:03:58 Thank you for listening. Don't forget your coffee tomorrow as we dive into how
00:03:58 --> 00:04:01 to build those truly positive school cultures.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:04 Stay tuned for that on Wednesday. But otherwise, have a happy Tuesday,
00:04:04 --> 00:04:08 have a wonderful beginning of this week, and we will talk with you again tomorrow.
