00:00:32 --> 00:00:35 Thank you. Good morning. Good morning. Now, today's episode of Your Morning
00:00:35 --> 00:00:38 Boost is brought to you by Grundmeyer Leader Services.
00:00:38 --> 00:00:42 All of our episodes are brought to you by GLS, where together we are transforming
00:00:42 --> 00:00:44 education one leader at a time.
00:00:44 --> 00:00:49 All right, Aaron, give us a Thursday boost. Today, we're talking about something
00:00:49 --> 00:00:53 fundamental, communication, and not just emails and morning announcements.
00:00:53 --> 00:00:58 I am talking about the kind of communication that It builds bridges across language,
00:00:58 --> 00:00:59 culture, and experience.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:08 In a world of growing diversity, the question is no longer if language will
00:01:08 --> 00:01:12 be a barrier. It's what we as leaders will do to make sure it's not.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:17 Let's start with a hard truth. Language can be a wall or a welcome mat.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:21 In many of our schools, students and families are eager to belong,
00:01:21 --> 00:01:24 but face an invisible boundary the moment they walk into the building.
00:01:24 --> 00:01:29 They don't hear their names pronounced correctly. They can't follow signage.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:35 They miss out on conversations simply because no one has the tools or mindset to reach them.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:40 And here's the real issue. When communication breaks down, so does trust.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:45 I remember early in my career working with students who spoke languages I didn't understand.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:50 I tried my best. Smiles, gestures, a few translated phrases,
00:01:50 --> 00:01:53 but I still wondered, was it enough?
00:01:53 --> 00:01:57 And I'll be honest, it wasn't. The moment we start accepting good enough as
00:01:57 --> 00:02:02 our standards for communication, we start losing students. So what can we do?
00:02:03 --> 00:02:07 First, normalized language learning for everyone. Pronouncing a student's name
00:02:07 --> 00:02:11 correctly isn't just polite, it's powerful. It says you matter here.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:17 Create opportunities for your staff to practice name pronunciation with phonetic tools.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 Better yet, encourage students to record the correct pronunciation on video
00:02:21 --> 00:02:24 or audio as part of your enrollment process.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:27 Second, equip staff with the right tools.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:31 Classroom teachers, front office staff, bus drivers, nurses,
00:02:31 --> 00:02:35 they all play a role in making families feel seen and safe.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:41 Simple handheld devices or even browser-based tools can allow real-time translation
00:02:41 --> 00:02:43 across dozens of language.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:49 The right tech, when thoughtfully deployed, can turn a hallway hello or a cafeteria
00:02:49 --> 00:02:51 question into a meaningful connection.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:54 Third, redesign your welcome experience.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:59 Newcomers often encounter confusion on day one. Especially if they don't speak
00:02:59 --> 00:03:04 English, consider creating multilingual welcome kits that include school maps,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:06 staff photos with translated titles,
00:03:07 --> 00:03:11 community resource guides, and a message from the principal in multiple languages.
00:03:12 --> 00:03:18 Fourth, teach with empathy, not just urgency. Fire drills, medical forms, course registration.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:22 These are common tasks that can be terrifying when you don't understand what's happening.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:27 Proactively explaining routines and expectations in students' native languages.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 It takes a little effort up front, but it prevents confusion,
00:03:31 --> 00:03:33 fear, and even isolation later.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:38 Here are three ways to start transforming communication at your school. Make it personal.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:44 Learn and use student names correctly and encourage your staff to do the same. Make it practical.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:48 Equip everyone on campus with tools that translate, not just interpret.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:53 Make it a priority. Build inclusive communication into your policies,
00:03:53 --> 00:03:55 your PD, and your school culture.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:02 Language should never be a reason a student feels invisible.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:07 Let's lead with intention, invest in connection, and create school environments
00:04:07 --> 00:04:12 where every family, regardless of their background, feels understood, valued, and empowered.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:16 Let's keep breaking barriers one conversation at a time.
00:04:16 --> 00:04:20 That is your morning boost for today. I hope it fills you with inspiration and
00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 hope. And I look forward to the conversation tomorrow.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:27 Aaron, that is a great reminder that words matter, but only if we understand those words.
