Home visits sound like a great idea. Until you are standing in a dark living room wondering what you just stepped into.
In education, we are often told to meet families where they are. Sometimes that means going to their home.
You knock on the door.
You smile.
You introduce yourself.
You try to build a relationship.
Most visits go just fine. But sometimes… they do not.

Schools visit families to build trust. The goal is simple. Connect with families and support students.
Most visits are calm. You talk for a few minutes. You learn more about the student. Then you leave. Easy, right? Usually. But not always.
When a Home Visit Doesn’t Go as Planned
Sometimes the door opens and things feel strange right away. Sometimes the situation takes a turn you never expected.
There were moments when I stood there thinking, How did this just happen? There were visits where I questioned my life choices. And there were a few times when I walked away thinking: Knock, knock… I regret this.
